River network with the Río Yata in the Beni lowlands |
The Río Yata is a river in the lowlands of the South American inland Bolivia . It lies in the catchment area of the Amazon .
course
The Río Yata has a total length of 1006 kilometers. It rises at a height of 165 m about 25 kilometers northeast of Lake Rogagua in the municipality of Santa Rosa in the province of Ballivián in the Beni department .
The river flows along its entire length in a largely north-easterly direction and crosses the Municipio Exaltación in the Province of Yacuma and the Province of Vaca Díez , where the river forms the border between the Municipio Riberalta and the Municipio Guayaramerín over long distances . After a little over 1000 kilometers, the Río Yata flows into the Río Mamoré at an altitude of 107 m just before it joins the Río Beni to form the Rio Madeira .
River length
Due to the low gradient and the evenness of the terrain, the river has a large number of meanders and oxbow lakes , especially in the upper and middle reaches . The distance between the source and the mouth of the Río Yata is just under 400 kilometers as the crow flies.
colonization
The Río Yata flows along its entire length through bushland and tropical forest and has only a very small population. Significant localities have only formed where the national road Ruta 8 crosses the river. This is the village of Ponton Santa Teresa del Yata at km 105 and the village of Rosario del Yata at km 904 . The Río Yata hit international headlines in 2011 when an 18-year-old drunk man was killed by piranhas near the village of Rosario del Yata.
