Location in the vicinity
Copacabana is the central place of the canton Copacabana in the municipality of Yunchará in the province of José María Avilés . The village is located at an altitude of 3677 m in the Cordillera de Sama Biological Reserve, east of the north-south ridge of the Cordillera de Sama and three kilometers south of the Laguna Grande , a lake threatened by climate change and agriculture.
geography
Copacabana is located on the Pampa de Tajzara in the southeastern part of the barren plateau of the Bolivian Altiplano . The climate is cool and dry because of the inland location and is characterized by a typical daytime climate, in which the mean temperature fluctuations between day and night are usually significantly greater than the seasonal fluctuations.
The annual average temperature is 11 ° C (see Yunchará climate diagram) and fluctuates only slightly between a good 6 ° C in June / July and a good 14 ° C from November to March. The annual precipitation is just under 400 mm, with a strongly pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 15 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with 80 to 95 mm monthly precipitation.
traffic
Copacabana is located 105 kilometers by road west of Tarija , the capital of the department of the same name.
From Tarija the highway Ruta 1 leads north, pierces the Cordillera de Sama in a north-westerly direction and continues via the village of San Lorencito to Camargo , Padcoyo and Potosí . In San Lorencito, a dirt road branches off in a southerly direction and reaches Iscayachi after eleven kilometers. From there the road continues south and continues over the Pampa de Tajzara with the salt lakes Laguna Tajzara and Laguna Grande to Yunchará . Thirty-four kilometers south of Iscayachi, a country road branches off in a south-easterly direction, which reaches Copacabana after eleven kilometers.
