The Laguna Grande is the largest lake a group of lakes in the Biological Reserve Cordillera de Sama in Tarija Department in Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The outflowless Laguna Grande is located in the southeastern part of the barren plateau of the Bolivian Altiplano in the Pampa de Tajsara ("Tajsara Plain"), which extends about 25 kilometers in a north-south direction and 10 kilometers in an east-west direction. The plain is bounded to the west by the north-south ridge of the Cordillera de Sama . The lake is at an altitude of 3645  m and has an area of about eight square kilometers, which, however, is subject to fluctuations depending on the precipitation and the season. The lake has a high salinity due to the lack of runoff and the shallow depth. Nevertheless, the water is used for agriculture, which, in connection with climate change , can lead to partial dehydration in winter with little rain.

Lagunas de Tajsara

In the plain is a series of outflowless lakes, of which the lake is the largest with about 2 to 3 kilometers in length and width and therefore bears its name "Laguna Grande". Two other lakes in the plain are of considerable size, the Laguna Tajzara about six kilometers north of the Laguna Grande, and the "Laguna Patanka" about five kilometers northeast of the Laguna Grande. In addition, there are other small lakes between Laguna Grande and Laguna Tajzara, depending on the precipitation and the season.

geography

Climate diagram Yunchará

The climate is cool and dry because of the inland location and is characterized by a typical daytime climate, in which the mean temperature fluctuations between day and night are usually significantly greater than the seasonal temperature fluctuations.

The annual average temperature is 11 ° C and fluctuates only slightly between a good 6 ° C in June / July and a good 14 ° C from November to March (see Yunchará climate diagram). The annual precipitation is just under 400 mm, with a strongly pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 15 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with 80 to 95 mm monthly precipitation.

colonization

The Tajsara Plain is only sparsely populated. Notable localities in the plain are Pujzara , Vicuñayoj , Muñayoj , Arenales and Copacabana . The "Camino Principal Tarija - Villazón" leads through the valley past the Tajsara Lake, nearby larger towns are Iscayachi (621 inhabitants) and Yunchará (138 inhabitants). ( 2001 census )
