The Cordillera de Sama (also Serranía de Sama ) is a mountain region in the Tarija Department in Bolivia and, together with the Cordillera de Lípez, the southern section of the Bolivian Cordillera Central . Numerous source rivers arise from it, which are of central importance for the drinking water supply of the surrounding valleys, including those which form the main river of the city of Tarija called Río Nuevo Guadalquivir .

location

The Cordillera de Sama extends north-south west of the Dapartamento capital Tarija in a length of about 150 km and a width of 20 to 30 km. The highest point of the Cordillera de Sama is the Cerro Campanario with a height of 4682  m in the very southwest of the mountain range. The mountain range joins the mountain range of the Cordillera de Tajsara o Tarachaca to the south , but does not reach its height. The mountain range extends between 21 ° 19 'and 21 ° 58' south latitude, and between 64 ° 47 'and 65 ° 02' west longitude.

To the west of the Cordillera de Sama, beyond the Pampa de Tajzara, the ridges of the Serranía San Roque and the Cordillera de Mochara also run in a north-south direction, and further to the west then the Cordillera de Lípez. In the east of the Cordillera, the river plains of Río Camacho , Río Pinos , Río San Andrés and Río Nuevo Guadalquivir extend around the city of Tarija .

climate

The climate of the mountain region is cold to moderate, depending on the altitude, whereby it is a typical time of day climate in which the temperature fluctuations during the day are more pronounced than the average values during the year. The annual precipitation varies from semi-humid to per- humid with annual values between 300 and 800 millimeters. The rainy season mainly includes the summer months from November to March, the rest of the year is rather low in precipitation.
