Palmar Grande is a town in the Tarija Department in southern Bolivia near the border with Argentina .
Location in the vicinity
Palmar Grande is the fifth largest town in the southwestern part of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Villamontes in the province of Gran Chaco . The place is at an altitude of 480 m and consists of two districts: one district is on the Ruta 9 highway between the cities of Yacuiba and Villamontes , the district a few kilometers further east on the railway line from Santa Cruz to Yacuiba. Fifteen kilometers west of the village runs the mountain range of Serranía Aguaragüe in north-south direction , which here reaches heights of more than 1600 m.

Palmar Grande is located on the southeastern edge of the Bolivian Andes chain in the lowlands of the subtropical Gran Chaco , which stretches over northwest Paraguay , northeast Argentina and southeast Bolivia.
The climate is subtropical with hot humid summers and mild and dry winters. The annual average temperature is around 25 ° C, the average monthly values fluctuate between around 19 ° C in July and 29 ° C in January (see Villamontes climate diagram).
The annual precipitation is around 700 mm, with a five-month dry season from May to September with monthly precipitation below 20 mm and a humidity period from December to March with 100 to 150 mm monthly precipitation.

Transport network
Palmar Grande is located at a distance of 282 kilometers by road southeast of Tarija , the capital of the department, and 66 kilometers north of the border town of Yacuiba.
From Tarija, the Ruta 11 trunk road leads east over the towns of Entre Ríos and Palos Blancos for 250 kilometers to Villamontes . There it meets the north-south running Ruta 9 , which leads south via Palmar Grande to Yacuiba and the Argentine border.
