The Municipio Villamontes (also: Villa Montes) is a district in the Tarija Department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The municipality of Villamontes is the eastern of the three municipalities of the Gran Chaco province . It borders on the Chuquisaca Department in the north, the Burnet O'Connor Province in the northwest, the Caraparí municipality in the southwest, the Yacuiba municipality and the Republic of Argentina in the south , and the Republic of Paraguay in the east .

history

In 1860, the Mission de San Francisco Solano was founded in the area of ​​today's Municipio Villamontes as a strategic post with the aim of converting the indigenous people living here to the Christian faith and promoting the settlement of the area. During the Chaco War , Villamontes was the scene of bloody and strategically important battles that made the place famous. In 1937 the Province of Gran Chaco was officially founded together with the city of Villamontes.
