The Municipio Villamontes (also: Villa Montes) is a district in the Tarija Department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
The municipality of Villamontes is the eastern of the three municipalities of the Gran Chaco province . It borders on the Chuquisaca Department in the north, the Burnet O'Connor Province in the northwest, the Caraparí municipality in the southwest, the Yacuiba municipality and the Republic of Argentina in the south , and the Republic of Paraguay in the east .

The municipality is traversed by the Río Pilcomayo on the border with the neighboring municipality of Yacuiba . The climate here is very hot with summer temperatures of over 40 ° C, which makes Villamontes the 'hottest place in Bolivia'. ( C. Zehner )
history
In 1860, the Mission de San Francisco Solano was founded in the area of today's Municipio Villamontes as a strategic post with the aim of converting the indigenous people living here to the Christian faith and promoting the settlement of the area. During the Chaco War , Villamontes was the scene of bloody and strategically important battles that made the place famous. In 1937 the Province of Gran Chaco was officially founded together with the city of Villamontes.

The population density of the municipality is 3.7 inhabitants / km², the proportion of the urban population is 75.9 percent ( 2012 ). Indígenas of the Weenhayek tribe live in the rural municipal area , 1,756 people in 2001. In addition to the Weenhayek there is an indigenous group of 132 people in the municipality of Villamontes, and there are also Guaraní in Villamontes .
The life expectancy of newborns in 2001 was 66.5 years ( 2001 ).
The literacy rate among those over 19 is 89%, namely 93% for men and 84% for women ( 2001 ).
economy
A third of the economically active population works in agriculture and livestock farming. In agriculture, maize , soy , melons , peanuts and tomatoes are mainly grown, while livestock farming consists of raising cattle, pigs, sheep, poultry and horses in mainly medium-sized and large farms.
The Villamontes market plays an important role in the local economy. It is of regional importance and creates trade and transport jobs for the local population. In addition, oil companies with jobs in technical areas are located in Villamontes.
