The Serranía Aguaragüe (also: Serranía de Aguaragüe or Serranía del Aguaragüe ) is a mountain range in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

location

The Serranía Aguaragüe (spoken: a-gua-ra-gu-e ) is the southernmost of the Bolivian Voranden chains and lies between the Cordillera Oriental in the west and the vast plains of the Gran Chaco in the east. It extends from north to south in the departments of Tarija , Chuquisaca and Santa Cruz . In the north, the ridge is bounded by the Río Cuevo (20 ° 21'S / 63 ° 20'W) and runs from there to the Argentine border (22 ° 00'S / 63 ° 45'W) and beyond, it has a total length of about 200 kilometers. The Cerro Sanandita (1753 m) near Sachapera is one of the highest elevations in the Serranía Aguaragüe , but over long stretches the ridge hardly reaches more than 1200 to 1300 m.

geography

The Serranía Aguaragüe follows the folding direction of the Andes high mountains without reaching the absolute height of the central Andean regions, its eastern flank drowns in the erosion material that has been washed into the Gran Chaco over millions of years. In addition to the Río Cuevo, the ridge is broken through by the Río Pilcomayo and the Río Macharetí , all three rivers seep further east into the Bolivian Chaco. Large parts of the ridge in the Tarija Department have been under nature protection as Parque Nacional y Area Natural de Manejo Integrado Aguaragüe since April 2000 , the ecology of which is acutely threatened by the increasing natural gas and oil production on its eastern flank.

Settlement and traffic

The Serranía Aguaragüe is almost uninhabited, but on its eastern flank there are some larger cities such as Yacuiba , Villamontes and Boyuibe , which are connected by the Ruta 9 highway . From east to west the ridge cuts through Ruta 29 from Campo Pajoso via Caraparí to Palos Blancos ; the Ruta 11 of Villamontes according Entre Rios , and Ruta 6 of Boyuibe about Camiri in the capital Sucre .
