Parliamentary election in Cape Verde 2011

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parliamentary elections in Cape Verde 2011 took place on February 6, 2011 in the West African island state of Cape Verde . The social democratic party Partido Africano da Independência de Cabo Verde (PAICV, German: "African Party for Cape Verdean Independence"), which has ruled since 2001, under the leadership of Prime Minister José Maria Neves , received a good 50 percent of the votes cast. Their main opponent was as in all elections since the introduction of the multiparty system in 1991, the liberal party Movimento para a Democracia (Cape Verde) (MPD German: Movement for Democracy) led by Carlos Veiga received, this time 40 percent of the vote. Both parties have dominated political life in Cape Verde since the transition to multi-party democracy in 1991 and have ruled the country for ten years each. The third-placed União Caboverdiana Independente e Democrática was able to double its share of the vote compared to the parliamentary elections in Cape Verde in 2006 , but still got less than five percent of the vote and two seats in parliament. The other two parties running for election were in the insignificant range of less than one percent and could not win any seats.

The announcement of the official result was delayed due to a power outage, but on February 7, 2011 Veiga admitted the already obvious defeat of his party. Observers saw this admission as a sign of the strength of democracy in Cape Verde before the official results were announced.
