José Maria Neves
José Maria Pereira Neves (born March 28, 1960 in Santa Catarina ) was Prime Minister of Cape Verde from February 2001 to April 2016 .
Early years
Neves was born in the Santa Catarina district on Santiago , the main island of Cape Verde. He studied administration in Brazil at the Institut Fundação Getúlio Vargas . After his return to Cape Verde, he entered the administrative service.
Political career
In the late 1980s he was in the youth organization of the then Unity Party Partido Africano da Independencia de Cabo Verde active (PAICV). In 1996 he became a member of the PAICV, now an opposition party, for the district of Santa Catarina, in parliament and vice-president. In March 2000 he became mayor of Santa Catarina.
The PAICV elected him in June 2000 as party chairman. Under his leadership, the party won the parliamentary elections on January 14, 2001. On February 1, 2001, he became Prime Minister. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund rate its economic and financial policy positively.
The PAICV won the parliamentary elections on January 22, 2006 again. On March 7, 2006, he became Prime Minister for a further five years. He also won the parliamentary elections on February 6, 2011 with a little more than 50% of the vote for his party. This is the third time in a row that he has been confirmed as Prime Minister.
In 2012, Neves was awarded the German Ocean Prize for supporting German marine researchers on the Cape Verde Islands .
