Partido Africano da Independência de Cabo Verde ( PAICV ) (German: African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde ) is a former socialist and now a social democratic political party in Cape Verde .

The PAICV, which sees itself as an Africa-oriented political party, in contrast to the somewhat neoliberal MpD (Movimento para a Democracia), enjoys the greatest support in areas comparable to mainland Africa: in densely populated urban areas such as Praia and in agricultural areas embossed areas like Santa Cruz (Cape Verde) and São Filipe .

The PAICV is a full member of the Socialist International .

history

In 1956 its predecessor, the Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde PAIGC (German African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde ), was founded by the Cape Verdean nationalist leader Amílcar Cabral . The PAIGC fought for the overthrow of the Portuguese colonial empire, for the unification of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, and used its cadres to achieve the socialist revolution .

Since 1961, the PAIGC fought in a guerrilla war in cooperation with its sister parties from the CONCP group ( Conferência das Organizacões das Colónias Portuguesas ) in the Portuguese colonial war . Since 1973 the PAIGC controlled Guinea-Bissau; after the Carnation Revolution of 1974, Cape Verde gained independence in 1975.

After the national wars of independence , the PAIGC established a socialist state with both territories under Amílcar Cabral's half-brother Luís Cabral . After a military coup in Guinea-Bissau in 1980, which deposed Cabral, Cape Verde split off and “his” part of the party took on the current party name. The PAICV maintained its regime of one-party rule and state socialism until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

In the first parliamentary elections in the multi-party system, the PAICV was defeated in 1991 by the MpD, Movement for Democracy (Movimento para a Democracia) .

In the presidential elections of February 11th and 25th 2001, Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires , who had achieved 46.52% of the vote in the first ballot , beat his opponent from the MpD Carlos Veiga by a minimal margin of 12 votes.

In the last parliamentary elections , held on January 22, 2006, the party won 41 out of 72 seats in the National Assembly of Cape Verdes with 52.28% .

In the most recent presidential elections on February 12, 2006, Pedro Pires again triumphed over Carlos Veiga with a share of the vote of 50.98%.
