Movimento para a Democracia (MpD) (German: Movement for Democracy ) is a more or less liberal party in Cape Verde .

It formed the government from 1991 to 2001. The MPD was founded on March 14, 1990 and held its first meeting in November of the same year. She won the first elections after the end of one-party rule in Cape Verde with more than two-thirds of the seats in the National Assembly .

During this transition period, the MpD dealt with the removal of Article 4 of the 1980 Cape Verdean constitution, which established the one-party system. The MPD brought a timetable for the transition period with it.

The MpD is a center-right party and favors free trade, an opening up in economic policy and greater cooperation with international organizations such as the WTO and ECOWAS .

While the MpD enjoys its strongest support on the islands of Barlavento , it also gained increasing popularity in the smaller towns of the Sotavento group, e.g. B. Mosteiros , Calheta , Assomada and Tarrafal . It is said that the Roman Catholic Church on Cape Verde prefers the MpD over the ruling PAICV .

The MPD's policy, often perceived as destructive to traditional local agriculture, has prevented greater popularity in agrarian areas such as Santa Cruz , São Filipe and São Miguel .

In the presidential elections on February 11 and 25, 2001, Carlos Alberto Wahnon de Carvalho Veiga , who had received 45.83% of the vote in the first ballot, was narrowly beaten in the second ballot by PAICV candidate Pedro Pires with only 12 votes difference.

In the general election , held on January 22, 2006, the party received 44.02% of the vote and 29 out of 72 seats in the National Assembly.

In the presidential election of February 12, 2006, Carlos Veiga was defeated again by Pedro Pires, with 49.02% of the vote to 50.98%. In the presidential elections in 2011 succeeded Jorge Carlos Fonseca 's victory.
