Assomada (Port. Cidade de Assomada ) is the capital of the administrative district ( concelho ) Santa Catarina , on the island of Santiago , Cape Verde . The city is located in the mountainous inland and with its 13,562 inhabitants (2009), behind the capital Praia and the port city of Mindelo , is the third largest city in the Republic of Cape Verde.
As a regional trading center, Assomada has a large market for everyday needs. Twice a week there is also a large weekly market that traders from more distant communities visit.
One of the few museums on the Cape Verde Islands is the Museu da Tabanca , which was built in the 1990s in the building of the old land registry in the city center and in 2011 to Txan di Tanki (Chão de Tanque) in the Casa do Morgado, a rural manor from the 19th century.
In addition to the facilities of the Santa Catarina district administration, there is also a secondary school in Assomada, the Liceu de Amílcar Cabral . The local hospital provides medical and dental care for the population in the communities of Santa Catarina, Santa Cruz and Tarrafal .
