Mindelo on the island of São Vicente ( Cape Verde ) is the second largest city in the Cape Verde Islands with 76,107 inhabitants (2010).

Mindelo is considered by some to be the cultural capital of Cape Verde.
geography
The city is located in the northwest of the island of São Vicente on the bay of Mindelo, a crater with a diameter of about 4 km. In Monte Cara opposite the city you can see a figure lying on its back with its head on the right.
history
With the beginning of steam shipping , the British made the port of Mindelo a supply station for coal . At the intersection of the routes Europe-South Africa-India-Australia and Africa-South America, the Randall company built a coal storage facility . Starting in 1875, the settlement of the company Cory Brothers led to significantly lower coal prices and the number of ships calling at Mindelo rose rapidly to 669 in 1879. With the expansion of the ports of Dakar (Senegal) and on the Canary Islands , the port's importance decreased temporarily; however, it grew again at the beginning of the 20th century to 2,000 ships per year. In 1952 the coal stores were abandoned because the ships were switched to diesel operation.
In 1885 a switching station for the first transatlantic telegraph cable was built in Mindelo , in 1912 Mindelo was the most important cable station in the Atlantic, where nine cables converged.
In 2003 Mindelo was the cultural capital of the Portuguese-speaking countries . In the same year Pope Benedict XVI. the Roman Catholic diocese of Mindelo was established.
