António Aurélio Gonçalves

António Aurélio Gonçalves (born September 25, 1901 in Mindelo , São Vicente Island , Cape Verde ; † September 30, 1984 ibid) was a Cape Verdean writer, one of the most important of his generation. As a narrator , critic and essayist , he created an extensive work. He was also a champion for women's rights through numerous short stories with female protagonists.

Life

António Aurélio Gonçalves was born in the "music city" of Cape Verde , Mindelo. There he also attended the São Nicolau high school before going to Lisbon in 1917 , where he continued his school education and also began to study there. At the Literary Faculty of the University of Lisbon , he studied philosophy and literature and received his doctorate in 1937 with a dissertation on the irony in the work of Eça de Queiroz ( Aspectos da Ironia de Eça de Queiroz ), which was later published as a brochure . There he also took part in literary life and wrote for various newspapers and magazines. In total, he lived in Lisbon for a good 22 years.

Returned to his home, Cape Verde, he was until his retirement as a teacher worked and taught history and philosophy at the Gil Eanes - High School in Mindelo. He has also published numerous books and wrote the famous story O enterro de nha candinha Sena in 1957 for the important Cape Verdean magazine Claridade .

In fact, his great role model was the Portuguese writer Eça de Queiroz . He called himself Creole Nhe Roque .

His book Noite de Vento has been translated into French.

One of the most important authors in Cape Verde in the 20th century died in old age on September 30, 1984 at the age of 83.

Honored by the Republic of Cape Verde

The Cape Verdean state honored him with various things: in his hometown of Mindelo there is a “Rua (street) Dr. António Aurélio Gonçalves ”. Besides Eugénio Tavares , he is the only celebrity who has made it to Cape Verde- Escudo , the 1000 note adorns his likeness. And there is a workers training institute in Praia , the capital, which bears the name of the writer Instituto para António Aurélio Gonçalves (IpAAG).
