The Estádio Municipal Aderito Sena ( German  Städtisches Stadion Aderito Sena ) is a football stadium with a cinder track in the Cape Verdean city of Mindelo , on the island of São Vicente .

It is the most important stadium in Mindelo, along with the six other football fields in the city , all of which are run by municipalities and equipped with artificial turf . The stadium has a capacity of 5,000 and is owned by the district administration ( Câmara Municipal ) of São Vicente, based in Mindelo.

history

The district administration changed the name of the former Estádio da Fontinha in 1992 to Estádio Municipal Adérito Sena . It was named after the versatile sportsman Adérito Carvalho de Sena (1905–1970) from Mindelo . Sena was best known as a CS Mindelense footballer , but also played four seasons for the Portuguese club Boavista Porto in the late 1930s .

Together with the Estádio da Várzea in the capital Praia , the Estádio Adérito Sena was one of the first certified artificial turf pitches in Africa after its extensive renovation in the early 2000s. The meanwhile 15 artificial turf pitches in Cape Verde have given the development of football on the archipelago a significant boost.

In order to be able to host international games and to welcome the Cape Verdean national football team in Mindelo for the first time , the district administration decided in 2013 to further expand the stadium according to international standards. A first version, which included a mall, was dropped in favor of a less expensive version. After the stadium was recognized by the world association FIFA , the latter financed a new artificial turf surface for the stadium for 500,000 euros, which was installed by a Portuguese company at the end of 2014. The first game after the renovation was the Supercup final of the São Vicente Islands Association between the island cup winners Batuque FC and the island champions FC Derby on January 13, 2015.
