The Cape Verdean national football team is the selection of the Federação Caboverdiana de Futebol , which was founded in 1982 and admitted to FIFA in 1986. She represents Cape Verde at international football tournaments. The first game of the national team - not counted by FIFA - took place on January 7, 1979 against Guinea-Bissau and was lost 3-0. The first game considered by FIFA took place on February 8, 1984 against Sierra Leone and was also lost (0-2). In November 2002, the team played outside Africa for the first time and had a non-African opponent for the first time with the Luxembourg national team . The game ended 0-0. One of the most notable victories was achieved against Portugal on March 31, 2015 in Estoril . Cape Verde defeated the hosts 2-0.

She has never played in the finals of a World Cup , but she achieved some remarkable results, such as a 0-0 win against the Portugal national team in their preparation for the 2010 World Cup, which competed in full strength.

In qualifying for the 2012 African Cup of Nations, Cape Verde was eliminated only because of a direct comparison with Mali .

The team achieved their greatest success to date in 2012 when they qualified for the 2013 African Cup of Nations . The best place in the FIFA world rankings so far was achieved in February 2014 with the 27th place, the lowest so far was ranked 182 in April 2000.

In qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Cape Verde made it into the group stage after a 1-1 and 3-0 win over Swaziland . With a fifth place out of six teams and ten points, she exceeded expectations. Among other things, she had to give way to the future World Cup participant Ghana .

In qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil , Cape Verde temporarily moved into the Africa play-offs thanks to a 2-0 win in the last game in Tunisia . Cape Verde benefited from the fact that the game that was lost 4: 3 against Equatorial Guinea on March 24, 2013 was rated 3: 0 for Cape Verde because of the use of the ineligible Emilio Nsue . However, the original 2-0 win against Tunisia on the last matchday was converted into a 3-0 win for Tunisia because Cape Verde had used an ineligible player in Fernando Varela . With that, Tunisia was subsequently declared group winners of Group B and instead of Cape Verde they entered the Africa play-offs.
