The Benin national football team (also French Les Ecureuils , the squirrels) is the football selection of Benin and was controlled by the Fédération Béninoise de Football . The team was known as the Dahomey national team until 1975, as Benin was formerly called Dahomey.
Due to the poor performance at the Africa Cup 2010 (out in the preliminary round), the national team was dissolved on February 9, 2010 with immediate effect. However, only six months later, Benin was already qualifying for the 2012 Africa Cup again.
The team has never qualified for a World Cup, but in 2004 , 2008 , 2010 and 2019 they qualified for the Africa Cup .
On May 10, 2016, the association was suspended by FIFA in accordance with Art. 38 of the FIFA Statutes with immediate effect, as a decision by a local court made it impossible to hold an upcoming election.
