Alain Gaspoz (born May 16, 1970 in Benin ) is a former Swiss football player . As a full-back he was three times cup winner and one time champion with FC Sion . Gaspoz grew up with his Swiss father and older sisters in Freiburg , his mother comes from Benin. In the run-up to the European Championship in 1996 , he was in the provisional squad of the Swiss national team , but participation was prevented by an injury. At the age of 32, Gaspoz returned to his native country for the first time in 30 years to debut for his mother's home country in the national jersey. In 2010 Gaspoz lived in Benin for the first time and gave ASPAC the first championship title in club history as a coach, at the same time coached the U20 national team and got involved in projects such as Right To Play and Football For Hope of FIFA , and the establishment of a national neighborhood championship for disadvantaged children .

Player career

society

Gaspoz began his football career in 1989 in his hometown, Switzerland, with the lower class FC Friborg . In the summer of 1991, the defensive player moved to Étoile Sportive FC Malley , who was active at the time in the National League B , the second highest league in the Alpine country. Gaspoz made it straight away as a regular player. But even he could not prevent the descent. Thus, the paths of both parties separated again at the end of the season and Gaspoz joined the first division club FC St. Gallen . After he was often only a spectator there, the defender was drawn back to FC Friborg in 1993. At the second division he was immediately back to top performers, but then said goodbye again in summer 1994 and signed with FC Winterthur . With these he made second place in Group B of the National League B, but then missed promotion to the final round. Gaspoz played a good season and so the first division club FC Sion secured the services of the defensive player for the new football year. Gaspoz stayed for three years. In the first year he celebrated the vice championship title with the FCS . The club took first place the following season. In the summer of 1998 Gaspoz left Sion and transferred to FC Lugano , which had just been promoted to the first division. He stayed there until 2002, apart from a brief interlude at FC Zurich from October to December 1999. After Lugano was relegated in 2002, Gaspoz looked for a new club and found it with the top Swiss club Servette FC Genève . Although he made regular appearances under coach Roberto Morinini , he left Geneva after only a year and signed with FC Aarau . They almost secured relegation in league 1. Gaspoz moved again when he received an offer from his former employer FC Sion. In 2006 he reached the final of the Swiss Cup 2005/06 with these . In the game against BSC Young Boys they secured success after a 1-1 win with 5-3 on penalties . Gaspoz led his team onto the field as captain and was available for the full 120 minutes. In the penalty shoot-out, he scored 4-2 for his team. After another season, Gaspoz ended his active career in 2007, but again laced his football boots for a few more years for the lower-class club FC Bragnes , where he was active as a player- coach .

National team

Gaspoz was a national player in Benin . He played his international game against Ghana in a 1-0 win. It was Benin's first success against Ghana, with Gaspoz scoring the winning goal. In 2004 he was part of the squad at the African Cup of Nations in Tunisia. The defensive player made his competitive debut on January 27, 2004 in the game against South Africa . National coach Cecil Jones Attuquayefio offered him in the starting lineup of his team. Benin was eliminated after the preliminary round. Gaspoz was used in two of a possible three encounters.

Four years later, at the African Cup of Nations in 2008 , the defender was again in the squad of the Beninese selection. It was part of the permanent staff of trainer Reinhard Fabisch . In all three encounters in the group phase, Gaspoz was in the starting line-up and was only substituted once. The Benin lost all three games and failed again in the preliminary round. At 37 he was the oldest player in the tournament.

Coaching career

After his first attempts as a coach in Switzerland at FC Bagnes , Gaspoz took over as head coach at ASPAC FC in 2009 . With these he became 2010 champion of the National du Benin championship , the highest league in the country. It was the first title in the club's history. It was also the first ever professional season in Benin and the league had to be structured first. Gazpos said: "During the championship we changed the mode six times until it worked well."
