Philipp Degen (born February 15, 1983 in Liestal ) is a former Swiss football player . Like his twin brother David, he was a member of the Swiss national team .
Career
societies
Philipp Degen began his professional career in Switzerland at FC Basel . There he completed 82 league games and scored four goals.
Borussia Dortmund
For the 2005/06 season Degen moved free of charge from FC Basel to Borussia Dortmund in the German 1st Bundesliga . In Dortmund he was under contract for three years. He scored one goal in 68 Bundesliga games - on the last day of the 2005/06 season against Bayern Munich to make it 3-2.
Liverpool FC
In the 2008/09 season he moved to the English Premier League for Liverpool , where he also signed a three-year contract. During this time he was the highest earning Swiss footballer.
VfB Stuttgart
On August 8, 2010 Degen moved back to the Bundesliga for VfB Stuttgart on loan until the end of the 2010/11 season . Degen could not earn a regular place. At the end of August 2011, the contract with Liverpool FC was terminated by mutual agreement.
FC Basel
After Degen had completed advanced training at his home club FC Basel in autumn 2011, he signed a contract with the Swiss champions on November 11, 2011, which was valid until the end of the 2011/12 season, with the option of an extension of one year. At the end of the 2011/12 season he won the championship title and the double with the cup win in the same year . In the 2012/13 season he was again Swiss champion with FC Basel. During the season Degen made a total of 49 appearances (four goals, three assists and eleven yellow cards).
The 2013/14 season was successful for Basel. The team finished the 2013/14 soccer championship as champions and was again in the final of the Swiss Cup , which was lost after extra time. Basel's Champions League season ended after the group stage, and in the Europa League it advanced to the quarter-finals.
Under coach Murat Yakin , Degen had a total of 44 appearances, including 20 in the Super League, five in the Cup, four in the Champions League and five in the Europa League, as well as in all ten test matches. He scored four goals and became Swiss champion for the fifth time.
The 2014/15 season was also successful for FC Basel. FCB finished the 2014/15 soccer championship for the 18th time as Swiss champions (for the 6th time in a row) with 12 points ahead of second-placed BSC Young Boys and 25 points ahead of third-placed FC Zurich . Basel was again in the final of the Swiss Cup , which was lost 3-0 to FC Sion . In the 2014/15 Champions League season , Basel advanced to the round of 16. During the 2014/15 season, FC Basel played a total of 65 games (36 championship, 6 cups, 8 Champions League and 15 test games). Degen had a total of 33 appearances under coach Paulo Sousa , including 18 in the Super League, 2 in the Cup, 1 in the Champions League and 12 in friendly matches.
Under coach Urs Fischer , Degen won the Swiss championship title with FCB for the 8th time, five times in a row, at the end of the 2015/16 Swiss football championship . For the club it was the 7th title in a row and the 19th title in the club's history. On the last day of the season, Degen announced his retirement in 2015/16 due to a protracted shoulder injury.
National team
From 2005 to 2009 Degen was part of the Swiss national team . He made his debut on February 9, 2005 against the United Arab Emirates . With his twin brother and midfielder David Degen he played for the national team at the 2006 World Cup in Germany , in which the Swiss were eliminated 3-0 after penalties against Ukraine in the round of 16. He was part of the defense that had not received a goal in all four games.
At the Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland he was again in the Swiss squad , but was not used in any game.
