The 87th Swiss Cup was held from September 16, 2011 to May 16, 2012. The defending champion was FC Sion , who failed in the semi-finals at FC Luzern . The FC Basel won for the eleventh time the Swiss Cup by a final victory against FC Lucerne.
The mode
Ten clubs in the Axpo Super League and 15 clubs in the Challenge League were directly qualified for the Swiss Cup (FC Vaduz from the Challenge League, which took part in the Liechtenstein Cup , is not eligible to play ). There were also 13 clubs from the first division and 26 clubs from the amateur leagues. They had to qualify for the Swiss Cup in regional competitions.
It was played in a knockout system. Each lap normally had to take place within a maximum of two days. The final was held in the Stade de Suisse in Bern .
1/32 finals (September 16-18, 2011): 64 teams, the winners qualified for the 1/16 finals.
1/16 finals (October 15 and 16, 2011): 32 teams, the winners qualified for the round of 16.
Round of 16 (November 26 and 27, 2011): 16 teams, the winners qualified for the quarter-finals.
Quarter-finals (March 20 and 21, 2012): 8 teams, the winners qualified for the semi-finals.
Semi-finals (April 11th and 15th, 2012): 4 teams, the winners qualified for the final.
Final (May 16, 2012): The winner won the 87th Swiss Cup.
