Daniel Gygax (born August 28, 1981 in Zurich ) is a former Swiss football player .

Career

In the club

Gygax grew up in Gibstorf in the canton of Aargau and played for FC Baden for ten years in his youth . At the age of 18, he moved to the National League A team of FC Zurich , where he made two appearances in his first year. In the following year its development stagnated; when he was not used in the first half of the 2000/01 season, he moved shortly after the start of the second half to the B-division club FC Winterthur , where he played regularly. The following year he was loaned to the A division club FC Aarau , where he was also able to prevail, and before the end of the 2001/02 season he was brought back by FC Zurich.

In the following three seasons Gygax became a regular at the Zurich team. He also showed his forward skills with up to seven goals per season. The greatest success with the FCZ during this time was winning the Swiss Cup in 2005.

From 2005 he continued his career abroad and moved to France in Ligue 1 to runner-up OSC Lille . There he played regularly in the first year, but in the 2006/07 season he was rarely used. He therefore moved to the first division relegated FC Metz . With the club he was promoted to Ligue 1. After his third year in the top French division, however, was relegated again.

On July 7, 2008 Gygax went to the German Bundesliga relegated 1. FC Nürnberg . There he came to his first appearance two days later in a friendly against FC Amberg. On July 12th, he scored his first goal in a friendly against 1. FC Lichtenfels . He made his first competitive game in the DFB Cup against RW Ahlen ; he was substituted on in the 84th minute and scored on penalties, which was won. In the new season he was used in the first games and scored his first goal of the season against Alemannia Aachen on matchday three . In the further course of the season he was repeatedly thrown back from injuries. At the end of the second half of the season he performed well as a winger and made a total of five assists. He played a part in the recovery of 1. FC Nürnberg when he prepared the first two goals in the relegation first leg against Energie Cottbus .

In the preparation for the 2009/10 season, however, Gygax moved back into the second tier. Therefore, it took until the ninth matchday before he made his Bundesliga debut. In this game against Hertha BSC he also scored his first Bundesliga goal. He made ten appearances in total, most recently against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on matchday 25 . After the season he left 1. FC Nürnberg.

On May 14, 2010, FC Luzern signed Gygax for the next four years. He scored two goals in his first competitive game against FC St. Gallen .

In January 2014 Gygax moved to FC Aarau on loan for the rest of the season . When FC Luzern he had been used in only six games. FC Luzern did not extend the contract that expired in summer 2014, so Gygax stayed with FC Aarau until 2015.

In summer 2015 he moved to the Swiss second division club FC Le Mont .

In the summer of 2016 he moved to Zug 94 in the 1st division , the fourth highest Swiss league, where he worked as a player, assistant coach of the U13 and striker coach and took on representative tasks in the club until 2017. In the summer of 2017, he ended his playing career and switched to FC Zurich as a youth coach for the U14 .

National team

Gygax was appointed to the Swiss national football team for the first time in March 2004 . He was used four times in preparation for the 2004 European Championship and then also played in all three preliminary rounds of the Swiss in Portugal . In the following World Cup qualification, the offensive player was part of the national team and was also part of the Swiss squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany , where he only made two short appearances. Until the Euro 2008 in Switzerland he was again part of the core of the national team on the right outside. At the tournament itself, he was again in the Swiss squad , but again only came for a brief assignment. After the EM he was no longer considered for the national team. Gygax scored five goals in 35 international matches.
