history

After it failed in the promotion round to Gauliga Bayern in 1939/40 at Kickers Würzburg, the club first gained national importance when it qualified for the then second-class Bayernliga in 1946 . There, the Lichtenfelser took second place in the northern group in the 1947 and 1948 seasons, which in the latter year allowed them to participate in the single-track Bayern League. In the first year the Lichtenfelser came third here.

For the 1950/51 season, it was decided to introduce a new second-class league, a contract player league below the upper league , which also reflected the geographical reference of the upper league - i.e. clubs from Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Hesse. In order to qualify here, a 5th place was required in the 1949/50 season, but the Lichtenfels team only came in tenth here.

In the now third-rate Bayern League, which was divided into northern and southern groups again from the 1953/54 season, the Lichtenfels team again achieved second places in 1954, 1956 and 1957. In the 1959/60 season 1. FC Lichtenfels was first under the former Yugoslav World Cup participant Željko Čajkovski , who was the player- coach . In the final of the Bavarian championship against the champions of the southern group, Lichtenfels won 5: 3 against Swabia Augsburg in Augsburg , but failed in the promotion round to the second league against Borussia Fulda and the Offenburg FV .

Lichtenfels could not repeat this performance in the next seasons, but secured 6th place in the 1962/63 season when it was necessary to be at least seventh in order to be able to participate in the reunited Bayern League the following season. Here the fourth places from 1966 and 1969 became the best final placements. In 1970 1. FC Lichtenfels even finished second, only three points behind FC Wacker Munich , which was heading towards the final highlight of its club history and was promoted to the Regionalliga Süd . Lichtenfels qualified in second place for the amateur championship , where however further ambitions stood in the way of VfL Neckarau in the quarterfinals .

In 1973 the 1. FC Lichtenfels rose as 17th after 27 years of uninterrupted membership from the Bayern League to the State League . Since then, the club has not been able to build on the past and was fifth class for the first time in 1978. Between 1982 and 1988 he was able to stay in the fourth performance level, the state league, for a few years, to which the Lichtenfels team was able to return again in 1991 and 1995 to 1998.

In the first decade of the 21st century, 1. FC Lichtenfels was between the 6th and 8th level of German football, between the Upper Franconian regional league and the Coburg regional league. In 2016 one rose as a champion of the district league Upper Franconia West in the Landesliga Nordost.
