Willi Spieß

Willi Spieß (born February 16, 1915 ; † unknown) was a German football player. With 1. FC Nürnberg he won the first German cup final in 1935 .

Career

Spieß was accepted as a striker in the 1st men's team of 1. FC Nuremberg for the football season 1934/35. He was already used in the summer of 1934 in the preparatory games against VfB Glauchau and the Chemnitz Police Sports Club. In the spring of 1935, the sports newspaper “Fußball-Woche” certified that he had good technique, but the 20-year-old still lacked playful maturity. In the 1935/36 round, the young player experienced sporting highlights but also a painful injury. In the Bayern district , 1. FC Nürnberg won the championship ahead of defending champion SpVgg Fürth and FC Bayern Munich . In the first half of 1935, the main round matches in the Tschammer Cup, which was held for the first time, were played against VfB Leipzig , Ulmer FV , PSV Chemnitz , Minerva 93 Berlin and SV Waldhof Mannheim . In the successes against Ulm and in the quarter-finals against Minerva 93, Spieß distinguished himself as a two-time goalscorer. The left winger paved the way to the final for the “Club” on November 24, 1935 in a 1-0 win against SV Waldhof with his goal in the 52nd minute. Spieß stood together with his storm comrades Karl Gußner , Max Eiberger , Georg Friedel and Josef Schmitt in the first German cup final on December 8, 1935. He played in his standard position as a left winger and won his only title in men's football with the 2-0 win over Schalke 04. In the group matches for the German championship in 1935/36 , Spieß played the first four matches in the spring of 1936, but was unable to continue playing because of a serious knee injury and thus missed the victorious 1936 final.

In 1937 Spieß was drafted to Ansbach for military service and trained as a gunner. In the final round of the German soccer championship in 1938 he came on April 3, 1938 in the 1: 2 away defeat against Hannover 96 for use. Since 1939 he was stationed as a private in Breslau and took part in the attack on Poland at the beginning of the Second World War. He later fought on the Western Front.

At the end of the war, Spieß was 30 years old. Nevertheless, he resumed his football career at 1. FC Nürnberg. From 1945 to the end of the 1946/47 season he completed 20 of the 68 point games played in the Oberliga Süd and scored five goals. He belonged to the "Club" eleven who lost the decisive championship game against hosts VfB Stuttgart with 0: 1 goals in 1945/46 on the last match day, June 23, 1946, and thus lost one point to the Swabians Vice championship had to be satisfied.
