Match report |
The most popular German soccer teams of the time met in windy rain and snow. Half a year ago, FC Schalke 04 became German champions for the second time, while 1. FC Nürnberg were five times champions. In the past championship, Nuremberg missed the final round, so Schalke went into the game as favorites. However, they had the handicap that their playmaker Fritz Szepan went into the game weakened, as he had completely exhausted himself four days ago in the international match against England.
Without Szepan in normal form, Schalke was unable to enforce its system of the famous Schalke roundabout . Instead, Nuremberg determined the flow of the game and took the lead in the 46th minute when the Nuremberg half right Eiberger shot the ball in from a crowd in front of the Schalke goal from five meters away. Although the Schalke team then started an assault on the Nürnberger Tor, but they could still not play their usual combination game and did not create any compelling chances. Their game was disheveled and incoherent. In the last five minutes of the game, the West Germans had several good chances of scoring, so that the Nuremberg Oehm and Munkert Schalker had to fend off shots on the goal line. But although the FCN practically only acted with nine field players due to an injury to Schmitt, Friedel from Nuremberg scored the decisive goal for the 2-0 victory shortly before the end. |
