Schalke roundabout

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schalker Kreisel is a form of football that was developed in the 1920s by the FC Schalke 04 team around Ernst Kuzorra and his brother-in-law Fritz Szepan .

The Schalke Kreisel is a passing game with direct short passes, based on the Scottish short passing game . Characteristic of this form of interaction was the active free running of the non-ball-bearing teammates in order to permanently offer the ball possession several pass stations and thus literally carry the ball into the opponent's goal with the ideal of having played all opponents. Nowadays, such a tactic is mostly called one-touch soccer or tiki-taka .

Origin and Effect

This tactic was still unknown in Germany at the time and was brought to Gelsenkirchen by the brothers Hans and Fred Ballmann, who were born in Dortmund and who worked in Great Britain until they were expelled after the First World War. Due to their confusing character for the opponent, the term “Schalke Kreisel” came up, or it was said: “The Schalkeers went round again”. With this attractive style of play, Schalke became very popular and successful in Germany in the 1930s and 1940s .

"Shooting at goal and not having played again was frowned upon," is how a member of this team quoted the form of play in the book 100 Schalke Years . As a result, however, it could also happen that the Schalke team "forgot" to score goals and lacked determination, despite their superiority and elegance.

Stadium newspaper

The stadium newspaper of FC Schalke 04 has also been called Schalker Kreisel again since the 2011/12 season , after having been published in the previous season under the title Auf Schalke . In addition, a magazine that has been informing the members of FC Schalke 04 ten times a year about news and interesting facts about the club since the 2010/11 season carries the title Schalker Kreisel .
