The VfB Bretten 1908 eV is a German sports club based in the Baden-Württemberg town of Bretten in the district of Karlsruhe . In addition to the soccer department, there is also a baseball department, the Bretten Kangaroos , which currently plays in the national league.

Predecessor clubs

First association founded

In 1906/07 a group of boys from Bretten attended a three-year teaching seminar in nearby Karlsruhe. Many of them also attended the games of the Karlsruher FV and the Karlsruher FC Phönix . Infected by the performance of the teams and the desire to imitate them, the group finally founded the football club Bretten 08 in 1908 . Due to the lack of financial resources, the young association was dependent on donations. The Bretten cattle market square was used as the first sports facility . The first game came against FC Stein . The association in this form then existed until 1913.

Second association founded

Since football within the city had already gained a lot of impetus from the previous club, another group of Bretteners wanted to try again and founded the FV in 1913 . Due to the First World War , which occurred a short time later, there was no real game operation at first. The first general assembly after the war took place on February 6, 1919. With a membership of 166 on June 3, 1919, the first association game against Vfb Bühl was won 4: 2 on September 30 of the same year . In the 1920/21 season, the championship of the B-Class in the Gau Mittelbaden succeeded. Also in 1921 a hockey team was formed, but it did not last long.

Spin-off from TV Bretten

As early as 1919, a football department was founded in the TV Bretten, which had existed for a long time. After reporting to the association, the team began playing in the B-class. After the separation of the gymnastics and sports association, the football department was also spun off in 1924. This then led to the founding meeting of the new game association Bretten in March 1924 . In the following year, the game association won the championship in the B class, which made it possible to secure promotion to the A class.

After a failed project to build a new sports field, it took until September 1st, 1929 for a new sports field ("In der Rehhütte") to be inaugurated. After the 1929/30 season, the district championship in the A-class was also successful.

Merger of FV and SpVgg

The first efforts to merge the FV Bretten 1913 and the SpVgg Bretten came up as early as 1927/28. However, these negotiations failed on the part of the FV because all assets, including the sports field, should be transferred to the new club. Thus, the FV wanted to secure a later start-up as a perspective. In the spring of 1931, however, the union worked. On April 20, 1931, the founding meeting of the now called VfR Bretten association followed. In addition to football, there were also fistball and athletics departments . Due to later quarrels between hostile members of the former clubs, a sports field that did not meet the requirements and ultimately also a lack of financial resources, the club did not exist long.

history

Beginnings up to World War II

In January 1932, VfB came into being as a new club. In terms of content, almost all members of the former VfR were found in it. The year the first club was founded, i.e. 1910, was then included in the club name. Even the soccer teams kept their league affiliations. Due to the lack of skill due to some players who were no longer involved, the season ended but relegation to the A class. On August 6, 1933, the inauguration of the new sports facility took place. After the 1934/35 season, the championship in the district class and thus the promotion to the district class succeeded. In the Tschammerpokal in 1935 , VfB beat the then Gauligist FC Pforzheim 2-0 at home and thus made it into the first final round of the cup. There the team met Freiburg FC, who suffered a 1: 3 defeat after a first 1-0 lead. With the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, gaming operations came to a standstill until it came to a complete standstill later.

post war period

As early as 1945, the first members began to breathe new life into the association again. After a general assembly with the election of a new board of directors, games in the game classes started again. The club's management recognized at the time that promotion would only be feasible with new players. After the 1951/52 season the A-Class championship followed in the Bruchsal district. After a second place behind VfR Pforzheim in the 1952/53 season, the championship in the 2nd amateur league succeeded after the 1953/54 season.

For the 1954/55 season , the team played for the first time in the 1st amateur league North Baden , which was the third highest division at the time. Here, however, the focus on the first team and promotion took revenge. After the departure of some players, it was difficult for their own youth to reach this level of play. There were also not just three, but four relegation places this season. With 29:35 points, the team was able to save over 13th place and keep the league. The home defeats continued into the next season . Thus, the spectators were gradually lost, with the club getting more and more financial problems due to the increased expenditure in the 1st amateur league. In terms of play, this season the class could only be kept just about 14th place with 26:38 points. Although there were only two relegated teams in the 1956/57 season , with only 20:40 points, the team could no longer hold the class this time as the penultimate and had to accept relegation back to the 2nd amateur league.

Time in the second amateur league

The first season in the 2nd amateur league ended with a rather mediocre place in the table. The breakdown of resignation in the entire team should then take quite a while. In the 1958/59 season, the club strengthened the first team with young, tried and tested players. However, the team was at the end of the first half of the table on the penultimate place in the table. With all their might, the team managed to finish ninth at the end of the season. After the next season, it was eleventh place. Due to numerous injuries in the first half of the 1960/61 season, the club only came third from bottom of the table, after the second half of the season it was enough for eighth place. In the following years it was seldom possible to reach the top positions in the table, but the league membership always remained. After the 1970/71 season, the runner-up could be seen as the first great sporting success. In the following season, however, it did not work out with the targeted championship title and the team had to be content with a place in midfield. Although the first game was lost in the 1972/73 season, the autumn championship was later celebrated, and at the end of the season even the championship of the 2nd Central Baden Amateur League .

Temporary return to the first amateur league

In the 1973/74 season , the team could not play on their usual place because it simply could no longer keep up due to the constant stress since 1933. As a result, the club played again and again in the Neibsheim , Wössingen , Knittlingen and Bretten district of Gölshausen . Although the team was always in the lower midfield this season, they had nothing to do with relegation until shortly before the end of the season. Due to unfortunate game constellations and results in the last two game days, the club then slipped to 14th place, which meant relegation with 24:36 points.

The stadium had meanwhile been refurbished, but only the first six home games could be played on the pitch. Due to mistakes in the work, the lawn had not connected properly to the ground, so everything had peeled off. After the square was closed, the facility in Büchig was used for the rest of the season. Thus, the club again incurred financial expenses, due to longer journeys, as well as absent spectators. In terms of play, however, this should not be an obstacle. Almost without defeat, the clubs secured the championship in the league without any major problems with a very large lead over the pursuers. To make the recovery clear, it was now in the relegation against the master of the Pforzheim relay , the VfR Pforzheim. After a 0: 1 away win, the game in Büchig was then lost 2: 1. On the place of the amateurs of the Karlsruher SC it came to the decisive third game. It would take until the last minute for VfB to score the only goal in this game and thus make the promotion back to the first amateur league perfect.

But even back in the top amateur division, the sports field was not playable. This time it was back to Neibsheim for the home games. Now VfB was heavily involved in the municipal elections for second place. He received support in this matter from the then community of Diedesheim , which itself needed a school sports field. In September the construction of a new training facility began a little below the previous stadium. This system could then be put into operation at the end of the year. In terms of sport, the first season back in the first amateur league started relatively well with a start of 5: 1 points. This was followed by a weaker phase, but in the end the team finished in fifth place with 34:26 points. For the next season , the team was finally able to play in the home stadium again. From a sporting point of view, things didn't go so well and with 25:35 points, we only managed to place twelfth in the end. But what should fit the sporting goal of staying up. In the next season , the club played due to a structural reform in the Baden League , which had only existed for one season , here at the end of eleventh place could be achieved, which means that the team missed the participation in the new Oberliga Baden-Württemberg and thus from next season in the Verbandsliga Baden play had.

Relegation to the district league

After relegation, the team should not calm down again, after several coach changes, VfB ultimately had to accept another relegation to the state league. For the 1980/81 season, the major goal of recovery was declared. Despite large financial expenses, the team had to take the shorter draw against the amateurs of the KSC and did not reach the championship this season. In the 1981/82 season there was another change of coach and the team had to rely more and more on players from their own youth. After a short period of time in the relegation zone, the team with tenth place in the table was able to hold onto the class at the end of the season. After the next season there was only one place in midfield on the table, this season a good 80% of the players were from their own youth. Over the years, the team got younger and younger, but was able to defend itself against relegation. After the 1985/86 season it was no longer possible to keep the class and the team was relegated to the district league.

Time in the district league

The first season in the district league could then be concluded with a mixture of experienced and young players in fifth place. After the 1987/88 season even second place followed, but this did not result in any qualification for promotion games. The team was able to secure the autumn championship title after the first half of the 1988/99 season, but it was not enough for the championship, which went to the suddenly strengthened Alemannia Eggenstein . For the 1990/91 season there was then a reorganization of the divisions in the Bruchsal district, with which VfB had to do more games against local clubs. Despite a very good goal rate and a very long time in first place, in the end only the runner-up was possible.

In 1994 the move to a new clubhouse followed. In terms of sport, the 1994/95 season was similar to the previous ones. If you were to be found in first place after the first few games, the team was in sixth place at the end of the first half of the season, which should also end the season. The 1995/96 season didn't look as successful at first as it should be in the end. After the interim tenth place, the club came in sixth place at the end of the first half of the season. After the winter break, the club held a test match against Dynamo Kiev , which they lost 9-1. With a new coach, things progressed in the second half of the season and in the end the championship in the district league should be pending.

Back in the national league again with a new coach, the class could be kept in 12th place. The season was still exciting because theoretically 30% of the club could have been relegated. The 1997/98 season was finally finished in fourth place in the table. At some point after that, however, the relegation to the district league was due again.

The way back to the national league

In the 2003/04 season the club played in the Bruchsal district league, in the end the team finished third here with 61 points. For the next season this was then converted into the Bruchsal district league, here VfB finished eighth with 47 points. After consistently top placements, however, it was never enough for first place, after the 2012/13 season the team even had to save themselves just about 14th place with 29 points from relegation. After that it slowly got better and the club was able to establish itself in the midfield. After the 2017/18 season it finally worked and the team was able to celebrate the championship in the district league. After a good 20 years of absence back in the Landesliga Mittelbaden, the team was able to make it into the class with 14th place and 38 points after the 2018/19 season. So the club still plays in this league today.
