The SV Steinach is a German sports club in the Thuringian town of Steinach .

history

In the past, the city was mainly known in sport for football. However, there were also successes in winter sports. B. Hammerschmidt from BSG Motor Steinach 1986 GDR champion in the ski special slalom and the combination. In the following, however, the Steinach football teams are mentioned.

Beginnings until 1945

1. FC Steinach was founded on November 4th, 1908. In 1919 it merged with FC Teutonia to form the sports club 08 Steinach. With the first place in the Gau Südthüringen within the central German football championship 1932/33 , the club qualified for the first-class Gauliga Mitte, which was newly introduced for the coming season . SV Steinach was runner-up in the first Gauliga season in 1933/34 and only had to admit defeat to FC Wacker Halle . After a third place in 1934/35 , the level of play could no longer be maintained in the 1935/36 season , Steinach was only ninth, which meant relegation to the second division. For the 1938/39 season they returned to the Gauliga, again the club played well and ended up third. After the season, however, SV 08 Steinach withdrew from the Gauliga Mitte, presumably due to the war. Steinach was successful in 1940 in the German cup competition, the Tschammerpokal . In the second round, SV 08 defeated the Gauliga champion CSC 03 Kassel with 4: 2. At the same time there was the ATV Steinach workers' sports club, whose footballers reached the finals for the German championship in the 1929/30 season. Via the stations FT Aschersleben and TSV Niederhaßlau, the Steinachers advanced to the semi-finals, where the team lost 7-1 to Bahrenfelder SV . In 1933 the ATV Steinach was banned by the National Socialists .

After the end of the Second World War, the sports club 08 Steinach was dissolved because the occupying powers had banned all civil clubs. In the Soviet occupation zone, sports competitions were initially only allowed at district level in so-called sports communities. So in September 1945 the Steinach sports club was founded, whose soccer team played in the district class and from 1948 in the regional class of Thuringia . In 1950 the sports associations were converted into company sports associations (BSG) , which were financially supported by so-called sponsoring companies . This is how BSG Mechanik came into being in Steinach and was renamed BSG Stahl Steinach a year later. On March 1, 1952, the BSG finally appeared as Motor Steinach. After the national soccer classes were abolished in 1952 with the establishment of the GDR districts, BSG Motor continued to play in the Suhl district league.

Between I. and II. GDR League 1957–1963

In 1956 the team was district champion and rose to the third-class II. DDR -Liga at that time . There one reached the 3rd place in 1957 and in 1958 the relay victory. The promotion round was also successfully completed, and so Motor Steinach was able to play second class in the first GDR league in 1959 . The league games could take place in the Fellberg stadium, which was inaugurated in 1958, but the team did not have sufficient strength and at the end of the season, third from bottom, missed relegation by one point. In 1960 the Steinacher were again season winners in the II. GDR League, but this time failed in the promotion round. In 1961/62 football was switched back to the autumn-spring rhythm, and all teams had to complete a round of three as a transition. After 39 games, Motor Steinach came second in the season, and this was enough for promotion, as the I. GDR League had meanwhile been increased to two seasons. The team had already been strengthened in 1961 by the talented young players Rudi Bätz and Günter Queck as well as by the defender Wolfgang Wenke from Vorwärts Cottbus , and Ulrich Speerschneider from SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt was able to do the new season in the first GDR league and Herbert Fölsche (11 league games for SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt). Equipped in this way, the team under their coach Heinz Leib managed to march through the first GDR league to first place at the end of the season and simultaneously qualify for the GDR league . The striker Werner Linß played a decisive role in this surprising success, and his outstanding form was rewarded with two games by the GDR national team (December 9, 1962 Mali-GDR 1: 2, December 16, 1962 Guinea-GDR 2: 3) . It was a rare occurrence for a second division player to become a national player.

Major league years 1963–1965

With only 8,000 inhabitants, Steinach had become the smallest league town. Contrary to expectations, Motor Steinach also played a good role in the top GDR soccer class. The 2-1 win against champions SC Motor Jena in the first home game in front of 25,000 spectators was not a flash in the pan. After the team had temporarily been in second place in the table, they finished the 1963/64 season with a seventh place. In the 1964/65 season, the soccer adage that the second year is always the most difficult for a newcomer came true. Only eight wins in three draws and 15 defeats were not enough to stay in the league, as Motor Steinach had to return to second class as bottom of the table. The balance of the two league years is reflected in the eternal league table as follows: Out of 46 participating teams, Motor Steinach reached 33rd place, and of the seven teams that only played two seasons, only Empor Lauter was more successful.

GDR League and District League after 1965

After relegation to the league, BSG Motor played for a few years in the South Season of the GDR League and was able to exist in the upper half of the table until 1969. After relegation in the 1969/70 season was only managed by the better goal difference against Motor Eisenach , the restructuring of the GDR league in 5 seasons saved the Steinacher from falling safely into the third division in the following year. In the newly created season E, the team was able to stabilize again before relegation to the Suhl football district league in 1975 . In the years 1977, 1980, 1982 each was promoted to the GDR league, which was followed just as often by relegation. In the all-time table of the GDR league, Motor Steinach ranks 43rd with 15 seasons and 386 games, 124 of which were won.

New establishment of SV Steinach 08

The abolition of the planned economy system as a result of the political change in the GDR from 1989 brought all company sports associations into economic distress, on the other hand, it was again possible to found associations under private law. In Steinach, former members of BSG Motor then founded the Steinach 08 sports club on February 28, 1990, based on the model of a predecessor of the same name that existed until 1945. In addition to football, winter sports, bowling, table tennis, volleyball, gymnastics and taekwondo are offered.

The first football team, which was fourth class at the end of the GDR game operations, became a "founding member" of the Thuringia regional class in 1991. In 2003 the club was promoted to the then fifth class Thuringian league, from which the club withdrew to the eighth class district league after the 2008/09 season. The last success was winning the championship in the District Oberliga Südthüringen in the 2018/2019 season.
