Athletic career

Engine Steinach

Until the end of the 1962/63 season, Gerhard Elmecker played in the company sports community (BSG) Motor Sonneberg in the third-class II. GDR league . In the neighboring town of Steinach , BSG Motor Steinach was promoted to the GDR league this season . Several new players were added to strengthen the team, including the 24-year-old Elmecker.

Coach Heinz Leib planned with him as a striker and used him as a center forward in the first league game of Steinacher. In the further course of the 1963/64 season, Elmecker was used in a variety of attack positions, but mostly on the right side. Of the 26 league games played, Elmecker played 23 encounters, and with his six goals he was part of the storm trio with Günter Queck (10 goals) and Ulrich Sperschneider (6) that scored the most goals for Steinacher. In the match between Motor Steinach and SC Dynamo Berlin on matchday 17, he managed a hat trick in his team's 4-1 win in the second half of the game . Motor Steinach ended the season as a surprise newcomer in 7th place in the league. In the second Steinacher Oberliga season 1964/65 Elmecker was again provided for the attack. In contrast to the previous season, he was now mainly used by coach Leib as a center forward or on the left attacking side. In the second half of the season Elmecker had a few missed matches, so that he only made 20 league appearances over the entire season. But he scored again six goals and was again only surpassed by Queck, who scored two more goals. After their second league year, the BSG Motor was no longer able to stay in the league and was relegated to the GDR league.

Bismuth Gera

After the descent of the Steinacher Elmecker moved to the 1965/66 season for the GDR league competitor BSG Wismut Gera . The Geraern succeeded in promotion to the league, Elmecker had only a marginal part of it with only eight appearances, but with his six goals he continued to prove that he was dangerous. Wismut Gera was able to stay in the league for a season in 1966/67, Elmecker was not used in the league team and instead played in the Gera reserve team. In the GDR league season 1967/68 he returned to the first team, but played only 13 of the 30 point games (5 goals). In the seasons 1968/69 (5 games, 1 goal) and 1969/70 (2 / -) he hardly played a role in the GDR league team and was now mainly used in the third-class district league team Wismut Gera II. Elmecker was active for the 2nd team until 1975. In 1973 he won the district championship with Gera, in 1972 and 1973 he was top scorer of the district league Gera with 30 and 34 goals respectively.
