1. FC Sonneberg was founded in 1904 under the name FC Sonneberg . Several renaming followed up to 1945 after mergers. The club appeared in Central Germany as 1. SC Sonneberg , TSV Sonneberg , and from 1933 as 1. FC Sonneberg 04 . On a sporting level, the Thuringians reached the final round of the Central German Championship in 1912 , in which they were defeated by SpVgg Leipzig-Lindenau in the semi-finals with 0: 6. Until the end of the war, the club could no longer qualify for the Gauliga Mitte .

In 1945 the club was dissolved and re-established as SG Sonneberg . In 1951 the name was changed to Einheit Sonneberg . Carrier operation was the city administration Sonnenberg, and the BSG as managing all GDR clubs under the name unit out. Unit Sonneberg acted in the Thuringia regional class , from 1952 the BSG became a founding member of the third-class football district league Suhl . The rise to the GDR league initially succeeded the Sonneberg local rival Motor Oberlind . The unit has since merged with ZSG Industrie Sonneberg to form BSG Motor Sonneberg. In 1955, Motor Sonneberg also won the Suhl district championship, but failed in the promotion round to Stahl Riesa and Chemie Leuna . In 1957/58 the runner-up was enough to move up to the 2nd GDR League created in 1955 together with Kali Werra Tiefenort and Motor Suhl . The second GDR league held Sonneberg until its dissolution in 1963 with secured midfield positions. In 1977 the EIO joined as a sponsoring company , but until the reunification the again renamed BSG EIO Sonneberg only shuttled between the district league and the district class.

In 1990 the club returned to its historical name 1. SC Sonneberg (since 2004 1. FC Sonneberg). After several rises, Sonneberg stayed in the Thuringia League for several years between 2000 and 2007 . In 2012, the Sonneberg team returned to the highest Thuringian league as champions of the South regional class, and were relegated the following year as the last of 16 teams.
