Since 1948/49: national class

From the 1948/49 season , the top national class was introduced. The 24 strongest clubs of the preseason qualified for this league, which was played in three seasons. The winners of the three seasons met in a final round and determined the Thuringian soccer champion, who was qualified together with the runner-up for the soccer east zone championship in 1949 and for the top GDR league , which was newly introduced in the coming year . After the Eastern Zone sport had been converted to the basis of company sports associations (BSG) , most of the previous SG appeared in the coming seasons with new names.

From the 1949/50 season , the Thuringia regional football class was only second class. It was reduced to two seasons, the two season winners determined the Thuringian champions. The BSG KWU Weimar prevailed 1-0 in the final against SG Lauscha , became Thuringian champions and qualified for the promotion to the football league in 1950/51 which was successfully contested. Lauscha and the two season runner-ups BSG KWU Nordhausen and BSG Carl Zeiss Jena qualified for the second-rate GDR league, which was newly introduced in 1950 . As a result, the national soccer class was third class from 1950/51 . The league was reduced to a season with 14 teams. The SG Volkspolizei Weimar won the league and rose to the second division. Also in 1951/52 there was a season with 14 teams. In the summer of 1952, the states in the GDR were liquidated and 14 districts were introduced in their place . GDR football had to adapt to the new administrative structure with its league system. The national leagues were therefore dissolved after the 1951/52 season and replaced by 14 district leagues . Instead of football Landesklasse Thuringia were the Football League District Erfurt , the Football League District Gera , the Football League District Leipzig and the Football League District Suhl .
