Since 1948/49: national class

From the 1948/49 season , a top national class was introduced. The 20 strongest clubs of the previous season qualified for this league, which was played in two seasons in a round-robin tournament. The winners of the two seasons met in a final game and determined the Thuringian soccer champion, who was qualified together with the runner-up for the soccer east zone championship in 1949 and for the top GDR league , which was newly introduced in the coming year . After the Eastern Zone sport had been converted to the basis of company sports associations (BSG) , most of the previous SG appeared in the coming seasons with new names.

From the 1949/50 season , the national class was only second class. The two seasons were increased to twelve teams, both season winners played the national champions in a final. The BSG Eisenhüttenwerk Thale was able to prevail in this final against the ZSG Hydrierwerke Zeitz and thus qualified for the promotion round to the football league 1950/51 which was successfully contested. Zeitz and the two season runner-ups ZSG Burg and BSG Schuhmetro Weißenfels qualified for the second-rate GDR league, which was newly introduced in 1950 . As a result, the national soccer class was third class from 1950/51 . The league was reduced to a season with 16 teams, the BSG Stahl Magdeburg secured promotion to the second division by winning the state championship. 1951/52 was played in a season with 14 teams. In the summer of 1952, the states in the GDR were liquidated and 14 districts were introduced in their place . GDR football had to adapt to the new administrative structure with its league system. The national leagues were therefore dissolved after the 1951/52 season and replaced by 14 district leagues . Instead of football Landesklasse Saxony-Anhalt which came Football League Hall District , the Football League District Leipzig and the Football League District Magdeburg .
