← Football East Zone Championship 1949 |
The GDR Oberliga 1949/50 was the first edition of the top division in GDR football , although it only bore this name from the following season and was still called the DS League in the first season . The GDR was founded during the season on October 7, 1949, so the winner of this championship round, ZSG Horch Zwickau , is considered the first GDR football champion. The season began on September 18, 1949 and ended on April 16, 1950.
qualification
Under the direction of the German Sports Committee (DS) founded in the Soviet occupation zone , the best teams of the preseason were to play an East German soccer champion in the newly created DS league. For the single-track division, the participants in the 2nd Eastern Zone Championship in 1949 were set. These were the respective champions and runners-up from the five eastern German states of Mecklenburg , Brandenburg , Saxony-Anhalt , Saxony and Thuringia . In order to do justice to the playing strength and the relatively high number of teams in Saxony, the state was granted one more starting place. The field of participants is completed by the two finalists and the third place in the FDGB Cup, which was held for the first time in the previous season .
This resulted in the following composition of the first league:
- SG Wismar-Süd (Master Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania )
- SG Schwerin (runner-up in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania)
- SG Babelsberg (Master of Brandenburg )
- BSG Franz Mehring Marga (Brandenburg runner-up)
- ZSG Union Halle (Master of Saxony-Anhalt )
- SG Eintracht Stendal (runner-up in Saxony-Anhalt)
- SG Fortuna Erfurt (Master of Thuringia )
- SG Altenburg-Nord (runner-up in Thuringia)
- SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt (Master of Saxony )
- SG unit Meerane (runner-up in Saxony)
- ZSG Industrie Leipzig (third in the championship of Saxony)
- BSG Waggonfabrik Dessau ( cup winner )
- BSG Gera-Süd (Vice-Cup Winner)
- ZSG Horch Zwickau (third in the cup)
The teams from the Soviet sector of Berlin were not allowed to take part in the championship because of their special four-power status . They played in the Berlin City League for the overall Berlin Football Championship or in the leagues below the City League.
Name changes
Due to the conversion of the sports business "on a production basis", various name changes of the various sports associations occurred before, during and after the season, as these were converted into company sports associations (BSG).

* The SG Planitz was dissolved before the season and connected to the BSG Aktivist Steinkohle Zwickau and the ZSG Horch Zwickau. Nevertheless, the ZSG Horch Zwickau was able to qualify for the new league, as they took third place in the FDGB Cup. The 2nd team played in 1949/1950 under the name SG Planitz in the state class of Saxony.
Season course
The championship was decided in a literal championship final between Horch Zwickau and SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt on the last match day. The Dresdeners, who were in first place in the table before the match day, lost 5-1 at home in the Ostragehege against the second-placed Zwickauers, which means Horch overtook them. After that, there were riots among the 60,000 spectators in the stadium, as the Dresden appendix suspected manipulation in order to harm the civil association SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt. As one of the consequences, the sports community was dissolved and the now vacant Oberliga place was initially awarded to the BSG VVB Tabak Dresden . However, when a number of former Friedrichstadt players - after only a short stopover at Tabak - went to West Berlin , the number of relegated players was reduced from three to two.
The descent became even more exciting afterwards, as a playoff was necessary due to a tie between ZSG Altenburg and ZSG Anker Wismar . This was Altenburg on June 17, 1950 - two months after the actual end of the league games - win 3-2 in Magdeburg , so that Wismar was finally relegated and Altenburg had managed to stay in the league. With the BSG Vorwärts Schwerin , the second relegated came from Mecklenburg. An additional Oberliga place was later awarded to the completely newly formed SG Volkspolizei Dresden .
The season was disappointing for last year's champions ZSG Union Halle , who only finished fifth. Last year's finalist Fortuna Erfurt (now known as BSG KWU ) came fourth.

Others
A total of 1,837,500 spectators saw the 182 league games, which results in an average of 10,096 spectators per game. There were 668 goals, or 3.67 per game, which means the second-best average of all time (only in the following season more goals were scored on average). Further records were set by the SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt. Their average of 3.35 goals per game was surpassed only once in the history of the league: in the 1984/85 season by BFC Dynamo . The high value was mainly the result of two quick wins in Friedrichstadt: The 11-0 win against Anker Wismar on matchday five was the highest win and the 12-2 away game in Babelsberg on matchday one was the highest-scoring game of all time in the league. Dessau also won double-digit numbers on matchday 18 against Schwerin (10-0). Thus three of the five highest league victories of all time were set up in the premiere season (only the BFC Dynamo later scored 10: 0 twice). The FDGB Cup was not won by a league club, but by SG Eisenhüttenwerk Thale , who played in the second class state class of Saxony-Anhalt .
Promotion lap
The promotion for the league season 1950/51 was played in a group of five between the respective masters of the GDR countries. The SG Vorwärts Wismar from Mecklenburg, the ZSG Großräschen from Brandenburg, the SG Eisenhüttenwerk Thale from Saxony-Anhalt, the BSG KWU Weimar from Thuringia and the SG Dresden-Mickten (which was renamed BSG Sachsenverlag Dresden during the promotion round ) qualified for this . from Saxony.

FDGB Cup
The main round of the FDGB Cup was played this season only after the end of the league season in August 1950 just before the start of the following season. The league champions Zwickau and the cup defender Dessau were surprisingly eliminated from a second-class team. The cup won the newly crowned Oberliga climber SG Eisenhüttenwerk Thale against the league fourth KWU Erfurt.
