Athletic career

Among the players that after the end of World War II the Dresden dominated football, belonged to the playing as a striker Walter Werner. He was not only a reliable goalscorer for SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt, one of the top teams in Saxony at the end of the 1940s, but was also appointed eight times in the Saxon state selection, for which he scored seven goals. When the first Saxon soccer championship was held in 1948/49, Werner scored the 1-0 winning goal for the Friedrichstadters in the decisive final match against ZSG Industrie Leipzig . They took part in the soccer east zone championship in 1949 , but SG Friedrichstadt was eliminated from the quarter-finals. As a Saxon champion, the sports community had also qualified for the first season of the newly founded DS-Liga (later GDR-Oberliga) . In the 1949/50 season, the now 29-year-old Walter Werner was part of the squad from the start and already set an exclamation mark in the first point game when he alone contributed six goals in the 12-2 win over the BSG Märkische Volksstimme Babelsberg . He finally played 25 of the 26 games played, was the top scorer in Friedrichstadt with 21 goals and came in second in the league scorer list. He remained goalless in the last game, which was decisive for the championship, in which his team lost 5-1 to BSG Horch Zwickau under scandalous circumstances . The spectator riots accompanying the game were ultimately punished with the dissolution of the SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt. While most of the players joined Hertha BSC 's West Berlin team , Werner stayed in Dresden. However, he only came in 1952 to a short league assignment for Rotation Dresden in the penultimate game of the season. There were no more games in higher-class football.

In the player lexicon , however, it is noted on page 417 of Walter Werner that he played at SSV 04 Wuppertal and Wuppertaler SV from 1950 to 1958 and would have completed 67 league games in the Oberliga West from 1955-58.
