The East Zone Championship in 1949 was played as in the previous season in a final round with ten teams. Participants were the champions and runners-up of the five state championships in the Soviet occupation zone . In the final round, a pure knockout system was played. Champion was last year's finalist ZSG Union Halle. Last year's champion SG Planitz could not qualify for the final round (see also: Zone Championship ).
