FDGB Cup 1949

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first competition for the FDGB soccer cup took place in 1949 . It began in the four eastern German states of Brandenburg , Saxony-Anhalt , Saxony and Thuringia as well as in East Berlin . The state of Mecklenburg had decided not to participate. Only company sports groups and the sports groups of the People's Police were eligible to play the challenge cup announced by the Free German Trade Union Federation (FDGB) .

In the four territorial countries, the cup winners were determined in the usual cup mode in simple knockout rounds . In Berlin there was a four-point round, the winner SG Concordia Wilhelmsruh had to play an elimination game against the cup winners of Brandenburg, the SG Volkspolizei Potsdam .

All of the finalists were then put together in a quarter-finals, through which the first winner of the FDGB Cup was finally determined in the conventional cup mode . The losers in the semi-finals played for third place. After two undecided matches, the winner was only determined in the third game.

The FDGB Cup competition in 1949 also served to determine three future GDR upper division clubs, as three places in the new upper division were reserved for company sports clubs. The three top division clubs identified in this way were the BSG Waggonfabrik Dessau , the BSG Gera-Süd and the ZSG Horch Zwickau .

Course of the game

In Halle (Saale) the cup winner from Thuringia and the cup vice from Saxony-Anhalt met. At Gera-Süd one suspected the better defense, which had only allowed three hits in the past five cup games. In contrast, the Dessau strikers had proven to be very accurate so far, they had scored 20 goals in their five cup games. For a long time it seemed as if the better defense work of the Geraer would be decisive for the game, because the Thuringians managed to keep the Dessau storm around the dangerous center forward Kusmierek in check. Over long distances, an even game developed in which neither side could gain the upper hand. Ultimately, Dessau's goal scorer Kusmierek decided the game, his goal in the 76th minute was the only goal, so that in the end the BSG Waggonfabrik Dessau was able to adorn itself with the title of the first FDGB cup winner.
