Athletic career

When football was rebuilt in Gera after the Second World War , including with SG Gera Süd, Günter Ritter was also part of the team there. In the 1949 Thuringian Cup final, he scored the 1-0 winning goal against BSG Zeiss Jena. On August 28, 1949 he stood as a center forward with the Geraern in the first final for the FDGB soccer cup , which Gera lost 0-1 against the BSG Waggonfabrik Dessau. With participation in the finals, the SG Gera Süd qualified for the newly created GDR Oberliga, which began playing in the 1949/50 season. This season, Ritter played 22 of the 26 point games played for Geraer and scored five goals. Further league appearances for Gera are not registered.

For the 1954/55 season, the now 34-year-old knight reappeared in the GDR league, now playing for the league climber BSG Chemie Karl-Marx-Stadt. He was used 21 times in different attacking positions in the 26 game season and ousted the previous standard striker Helmut Lorenz . Knight was injured three games before the end of the season, so he had to sit out for over a year. It was not until the 9th match day of the 1956 season, which was held for the first time in the calendar year rhythm, that he played again as a left winger for the Karl-Marx-Städter , who now appeared as SC Motor. On the 12th matchday he played for the last time in the Karl-Marx-Städter league team, after which his football career in the performance area was over. He had added 25 more premier league appearances to his 22 top division games in Gera in Karl-Marx-Stadt, and he increased his goal account to a total of seven goals.
