In Germany-wide football, the name Walter Elze first appeared in the final round of the German championship in 1936/37 . His team SV Dessau 05 had qualified as champions of the Gauliga Mitte and played six games in the finals, but then dropped out. Elze had been used in all matches and had scored two goals. By 1944, SV Dessau 05 was involved in five other championship finals, in which Elze played 14 games of the 16 games played. In the total of six finals, Elze scored four goals.

After the end of the Second World War , SV Dessau 05 was dissolved. In 1946, a "Sports Community Dessau-Nord" was founded, and Walter Elze was one of its players. After the SG had initially participated in local competitions (1947/48 2nd place in the Dessau district), it was converted into the Betriebsportgemeinschaft (BSG) Waggonbau Dessau in 1949 . Under this name she took part in the first competition for the Eastern Zone FDGB Cup , which she won with a 1-0 final victory over Gera-Süd . In the final, Walter Elze was called up as left defender.

As a cup winners, BSG Waggonbau qualified for the newly created East German Zone League (later DS-Oberliga, GDR-Oberliga ), which played its point games in the 1949/50 season. During this season, BSG Waggonbau was renamed BSG Motor and took third place after the end of the season. At the beginning of the season, Walter Elze was already 39 years old. Nevertheless, he was still in the Dessau squad, but was only used in the first half of the season in four point games. He then ended his career as a football player.
