Course of the game
Erfurt went into the game as the clear favorite. With the later GDR national players Helmut Nordhaus and Jochen Müller, they had finished fourth in the newly introduced league, which is now the highest soccer class in the GDR, while SG EHW Thale had just been promoted to the league. With their center forward Werner Oberländer, they only had one above-average player in their ranks. But from the start the encounter took a surprising turn. With the first attack, Thale scored the opening goal in the first minute of the game through right winger Günter Weitkuhn. Thereafter, the Thaler defense against the Erfurt strikers proved to be stable. Again and again Erfurt's goal scorer Wolfgang Nitsche and Winfried Herz got stuck on the way to the opposing goal. But Thale did not rely solely on securing the 1-0. After Erfurt had not been able to overcome Thales goalkeeper Bernhardt for over an hour, the Harzstadt team struck again in the 65th minute and scored the 2-0 through Rudolf Wlassny. Then the resistance of the Erfurt was finally broken, the team could no longer turn the tide. To make matters worse, her goalkeeper Senftleben was injured in the 58th minute and had to be replaced by field player Wolfgang Nitsche. Thale, on the other hand, played himself into a real frenzy, the supposed outsider continued to play, and with two more goals by Oberländer and Willi Gropp he surprisingly secured the cup victory.
