Athletic career

In 1950, the 21-year-old Hans Grützemann became soccer champion in Saxony-Anhalt with the Eisenhüttenwerk Thale sports association . In the subsequent round of promotion to the GDR Oberliga, the SG EHW reached the qualification for the Oberliga season 1950/51. In the GDR Cup competition held before the season opened , Thale reached the final , which was won 4-0 against KWU Erfurt with Grützemann as left defender .

Grützemann was also a defender in the squad of SG EHW for their first league season. He was used in the first league game and was used in a total of 21 games in the 34-game season. In the following three seasons he completed 89 games of the 96 league games played and was always used as a left defender. During this time, the SG EHW Thale was converted into the Betriebsportgemeinschaft (BSG) Stahl.

After the 1953/54 season, the BSG Stahl Thale had to relegate to the GDR league . There Grützemann played 25 of the 26 point games held in 1954/55. Although the BSG Stahl had reached seventh place in their season at the end of the season, it was not enough for the BSG to stay in the league because of the reduction in the GDR league to one season, and they played in the third-rate 2nd GDR league from 1955/56 . Hans Grützemann then stopped playing in higher-class football.
