Cup winner 1977: SG Dynamo Dresden

For the 26th time in the football season was 1976/77 the FDGB Cup football played.

The competition began with the 15 district cup winners and 43 teams from the second-rate GDR league from the 1975/76 season. The GDR league consisted of 60 teams this season, but the reserve teams of the GDR upper league were no longer eligible to play, eight GDR league players had a bye. Eight district cup winners survived the first main round and had to deal with the bye teams and 14 other teams in the GDR league in an intermediate round.

Four district cup winners were able to qualify for the second main round, in which the 14 upper league teams intervened. With Vorwärts Stralsund II only one district cup winner made it to the last sixteen, with FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and Wismut Aue, two senior division representatives were eliminated at the first attempt.

The pairings of the eighth, quarter and semi-finals were played in the first and second legs. In the round of 16, the last district cup winner Vorwärts Stralsund II was eliminated, as was last year's cup finalist Vorwärts Frankfurt / O. , which was eliminated by the only remaining GDR league club Motor Suhl . The Suhlers ended in the quarter-finals, where they had to say goodbye to cup defender 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig 3-0 from the cup competition after scoring 4: 4 in the first leg in the second leg . After two semi-final wins over Chemie Halle, the Leipzig team came back to the final, where they met the new champions Dynamo Dresden . These had also eliminated FC Carl Zeiss Jena with two wins .

Course of the game

The game had a clear favorite with Dynamo Dresden, the team not only went into the game as newly crowned champions, but also with eight current national players. While the Dresdeners, who had lost their last three cup finals after winning the final in 1971, were aiming for a double championship and cup, the Leipzig team, with only three current national players but hoping for the old international Frenzel, was looking to defend the cup. Despite the advance praise for Dresden, the game was perfectly even, a winner was not in sight for a long time. The Dynamo midfield row could not set any decisive accents at first, Lok's striker showed himself to be a dangerous goal but could not use their chances. After a goalless first half, Dynamo seemed to want to set an example with the quick opening goal by Sachse after the break. In the 46th minute, the Dresden center forward had a ball deflected from the Leipzig Eichhorn with a twist in the goal. Although Dresden then had several opportunities to make it 2-0, the deficit at Leipzig released new forces, and 1. FC Lokomotive hit back with counterattacks. After just 18 minutes it was right winger Löwe who, after a 30-meter pass by Frenzel, played Dresden's Klaus Müller and scored the equalizer with a sharp shot. In the middle of an attack phase in Dresden eight minutes later, right-back Sekora, who was able to shake off Häfner at the center line, gave Leipzig a 2-1 lead. Then Dynamo Dresden switched to an unconditional attack, even Libero Dörner joined the assault. The Lok team was pushed back into their own half of the game and only got to defend their own goal. The Dresden team ran into the opponent's penalty area in vain for almost 20 minutes, but with a real show of strength Dynamo managed to turn things around. With a double strike within two minutes shortly before the end of the month, Weber and Sachse were able to wrest the Leipzig team from the victory they believed to be certain. Weber headed in a corner shot by Häfner in the 85th minute, Sachse hit with a long-range shot in the 87th minute.
