FDGB Cup 1978/79
The Football FDGB Cup 1978/79 was the 28th edition of this competition. From the last sixteen to the semi-finals, there were back and forth legs, as in the previous year.
The cup action began with three qualifying games in which three GDR league players and three district cup finalists were involved. With Dynamo Gera and Stahl Thale , two district representatives prevailed.
In the first main round, 55 GDR league players, 15 district finalists and the two relegated league players from the previous season met each other. After an intermediate round with 36 teams, the 14 league teams intervened in the second main round. Wismut Aue , Chemie Böhlen , Chemie Halle , Stahl Riesa and Sachsenring Zwickau dropped out of these after their first appearance.
Of the six remaining teams in the GDR league, only Energie Cottbus and Motor Suhl survived the round of 16, both of which remained victorious in league duels. However, both had to give up in the quarter-finals against last year's finalists Dynamo Dresden and 1. FC Magdeburg . In the semifinals, the Dresden team were eliminated by the Berliner Dynamos , while 1. FC Magdeburg reached the final again with two wins against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig .

Course of the game
In the 28th final of the FDGB Cup, the five-time cup winners 1. FC Magdeburg and FC Dynamo from Berlin, who are eight points ahead of the current league season, met each other. Both teams began the game with close shielding of the opposing attackers and sought success in dogged duels. The Magdeburg team quickly gained the upper hand, won most of the duels and had the Berlin playmakers Terletzki and Riediger firmly under control. Nevertheless, both teams had good scoring chances, which were however destroyed by both goalkeepers with brilliant saves. In the second half, the Magdeburg team improved again and brought their midfield row to the fore. Their game was now characterized by high speed and attack pressure. However, all their attacking efforts failed because of the excellent goalkeeper Rudwaleit. The Berlin attackers were also unable to overcome the Magdeburger Heyne, but also missed many scoring opportunities without concentrating. Despite great willingness to run and fighting strength on both sides, no goal was scored for 90 minutes. At this point, however, it already appeared that the BFC was already in poor condition. Consequently, the decision was finally made in the 11th minute of extra time: FCM forced their seventh corner, which Sparwasser entered halfway up. The forward stopper Seguin dived in flight to the ball deflected by the Berlin Trieloff and headed it into the Berlin gate. Although the BFC immediately replaced two fresh players, they did not manage to turn the game around. In addition to their better duel, the Magdeburg team also had Klaus Decker, the best man on the field, who had the most dangerous Berlin Hans-Jürgen Riediger under control. The worst player on the field was referee Herrmann, who deliberately ignored the numerous fouls on the Magdeburg striker Streich. Despite this disadvantage, 1. FC Magdeburg won the GDR soccer cup for the sixth time in its sixth final.
Comments by the trainers (Volksstimme Magdeburg, April 30, 1979)
- “We put our good virtues, morals and fighting spirit, into the appropriate playful performance. After the change, when we not only eliminated the BFC game designers but also played away from them better and better, we became more dangerous. ”- Klaus Urbanczyk, FCM
- "The Magdeburg team were better in the duel, they looked more snappy and achieved clear advantages." - Jürgen Bogs, BFC
