Manfred Zapf
Manfred Zapf (born August 24, 1946 in Stapelburg ) was a football player in the GDR Oberliga for SC Aufbau / 1. FC Magdeburg . In 1989 he briefly coached the GDR national soccer team , in which he had previously played 12 games as an active player.
life and career
Coming from SG Dynamo Stapelburg, the 1.78 m tall Manfred Zapf played between 1964 and 1979 as a defender at SC Aufbau and its successor at 1. FC Magdeburg. His first competitive game for the SC structure he completed on April 14, 1964 in the league match at Motor Zwickau (0: 6). In total, Zapf made 467 competitive games for Magdeburg, including 327 appearances in the major league and 49 European Cup appearances. In addition, there are 46 competitive goals on his account. With 1. FC Magdeburg he won the GDR championship in 1972, 1974 and 1975, as well as the GDR football cup in 1965, 1969 and 1973, 1978 and 1979 . In 1974 he was in the victorious Magdeburg team in the final for the European Cup Winners' Cup (1. FC Magdeburg - AC Milan 2-0). From 1968 to 1979 Zapf was the team captain of the FCM.
Between 1969 and 1975, Zapf played 16 times in the national soccer team of the GDR or 12 times according to the FIFA rules on international matches from 1999 . He played his first international game on June 22, 1969 against Chile (0-1). On June 5, 1975 he took his leave of the national team in the encounter Iceland against GDR (2-1). At the finals of the 1974 World Cup, Zapf was not part of the Buschner team. With the GDR B selection, Zapf completed four games and 19 games in the junior team. As a junior player, he made four appearances in the GDR junior team in 1963 and 1964. Between 1972 and 1975 he played ten times in the GDR Olympic team , with which he won the bronze medal in 1972.
After his active career, Zapf, who had also completed an apprenticeship as a mechanical engineer, worked as a team leader at 1. FC Magdeburg until 1981. From 1983 to 1990 he was Deputy Secretary General of the GDR Football Association. In early 1989, Zapf was appointed coach of the national team. Under his leadership, the GDR team completed six international matches between February 13 and May 20, 1989. During this period there were two defeats and one draw in games for the World Cup qualification, which was then practically missed. As a result, Zapf was dismissed on June 19, 1989 as coach of the national team. After 1990 he was a brief manager at Germania 88 Berlin , after which he returned to 1. FC Magdeburg where he became branch manager.
