Károly Sós (born April 5, 1909 in Budapest ; † August 5, 1991 there ) was a Hungarian football player and coach.

Career as a player

Sós began his career in 1930 with Vasas Nemzeti , where he played until 1932. In 1932 he moved to Attila FC Miskolc before moving to France a year later. There he was active from 1933 to 1935 for the US Saint-Servan-Saint-Malo and from 1935 to 1937 at Olympique Alès in Division 1 . In 1937 he played for FC Bern and in 1938 for Banská Bystrica in Slovakia. He then returned to Hungary, where he played with Budafok until 1939 and with Gamma FC Budapest from 1939 to 1944 , where he ended his active career.

Career as a coach

In his last position as a player, Sós also began his coaching career. From 1947 to 1950 and 1953 he then trained Haladás Szombathely , from 1951 to 1952 Dorog Budapest , from 1953 to 1957 Ferencváros Budapest and from 1957 to 1961 Honved Budapest .

On May 14, 1961 Sós was the first time coach of the GDR national soccer team in the World Cup qualifier against the Netherlands (1-1) in Leipzig . He took over the office from Heinz Krügel . Under the direction of Sós, according to many experts, the team played the most attractive football. In total, Sós sat on the bench in 43 international matches, in which the team scored 19 wins and 10 draws. In 1964 he won the bronze medal with the team at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo .

However, the GDR also failed under Sós to qualify for a World Cup or European Championship. After the unsuccessful qualification for the European Championship in 1968, the Hungarian did not extend his contract and was replaced by Harald Seeger . The last game under Sós was played by the GDR team on December 6, 1967 in the Olympic qualifying game against Romania in Bucharest (1-0).

From 1968 to 1969 Sós was the coach of the Hungarian national football team before ending his coaching career. He then held various positions in Hungarian football. Among other things, he was President of the Hungarian Cup and a member of the coaching council.
