Georg Buschner (born December 26, 1925 in Gera ; † February 12, 2007 in Jena ) was a German soccer player and soccer coach. The six-time national player of the GDR was after his active career from 1970 to 1981 coach of the national soccer team of the GDR .
biography
Career as a player
Georg Buschner's father was a Reichsbahn official, his mother a housewife. From 1935 he played football at 1. SV Gera . In 1944 Buschner became a member of the NSDAP in Gera . After the Second World War he worked first as a construction worker and then as a new teacher until 1947 . He joined the SED . From 1947 to 1952 Buschner studied history, education and sports science in Jena . On the side he played, at that time still as a center forward, with the BSG Gera Süd, with which he was in the 1949 final of the FDGB Cup . From 1949 to 1952 he played 84 games in the GDR league for Gera , the club names changed several times. After completing his studies, he became an assistant at the University of Jena and a footballer at the Zeiss factory.
From 1952 to 1958 Buschner played for SC Motor Jena (69 league and 77 league games). Between 1954 and 1957 he played six international matches for the GDR as a defender, including in the national team's first competitive game (2-1 on May 19, 1957 against Wales ). Buschner played his last league game on July 6, 1958 in the home game against SC activist Brieske-Senftenberg (3-0).
Club trainer in Jena
Just six weeks after his last game, Georg Buschner sat on August 17, 1958 against SC Chemie Halle (4-0) for the first time for SC Motor Jena in the coaching bench as the successor to Heinz Pönert . In 1963, Buschner and his team became East German champions for the first time - a success that he repeated in 1968 and 1970 with the club that has since been renamed FC Carl Zeiss Jena. In 1970, 29-year-old Hans Meyer became his assistant coach. Buschner ended his coaching activity in Jena on June 30, 1971 and was only responsible for the national team. Meyer took over the coaching position at FC Carl Zeiss Jena on July 1, 1971. From 1966 to 1971 Buschner worked unofficially as GMS "Georg" with the Ministry for State Security .
National coach of the GDR
The sports scientist took over the GDR selection against his will in 1970 - in the first year in personal union with his post as club coach - and looked after them in 112 international matches until 1981 (59 wins, 30 draws and 23 defeats). According to FIFA's interpretation , there were 104 games (56 wins, 27 draws and 21 defeats).
Since A-choice and Olympiaelf were staffed in the early and mid 1970s, identical recorded Buschner also responsible for success on Olympic parquet: was the communications team in Munich 1972 Olympic third and four years later in Montreal Olympic champion . For this success he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.
One of the greatest successes was the 1-0 win against the German national team at the 1974 World Cup with a goal by Jürgen Sparwasser . At the end of 1981, Georg Buschner was dismissed after a lack of success and failure to qualify for the 1982 World Cup . This resulted in early retirement. “I was practically banned from working,” he said in an interview with journalist and GDR sports reporter Gottfried Weise in 2005 .
After football
In the last years of his life, Georg Buschner mainly traveled the world together with his wife Sonja. a. to Gran Canaria and Egypt . Buschner died on the night of February 12, 2007. He left behind his wife, two sons and three grandchildren. The funeral service took place on February 16, 2007 in Jena. Several football greats such as Hans Meyer , Jürgen Sparwasser , Joachim Streich , Michael Strempel , Lothar Kurbjuweit , Harald Irmscher , Bernd Stange , Rainer Schlutter , Ulrich Göhr and many others were present.

For his success as a national coach he received the Patriotic Order of Merit several times .
