Harald Seeger

Harald Seeger (born April 1, 1922 in Brandenburg an der Havel , † May 18, 2015 in Wandlitz ) was a German football player , coach and functional . From 1967 to 1969 he was the coach of the GDR national soccer team . In the GDR league he coached the Berlin soccer clubs ASK Vorwärts Berlin and 1. FC Union Berlin .

Athletic career and life

Seeger began his football career at the age of nine with SV Havel 08 Brandenburg . From 1937 to 1942 he played at Brandenburger SC Süd 05 , for which he was used as a right winger in the men's team from 1939. After the Second World War, Seeger played for the SG Volkspolizei North Brandenburg until 1948 and from 1949 to 1950 as a player-coach for the ZSG unit Kyritz .

From 1952 to 1954 Seeger worked for the State Committee for Physical Culture and Sport and also looked after the football team of Einheit Potsdam (1952 to 1953). From 1954 Seeger began to work full-time as a trainer, initially until 1957 for the East Berlin city selection and at the same time 1954-1958 at Motor Treptow in the district class. After half a year at Einheit Treptow in the district league, he took over the training of the GDR upper division ASK Vorwärts Berlin in August 1959 , which he led to the GDR championship in 1960 and 1962. In 1963 Seeger moved to the coaching staff of the GDR football association . Initially, he was responsible for the national youth team, with whom he and Manfred Pfeifer won the UEFA youth tournament in 1965.

On December 6, 1967 Seeger replaced the previous national team coach Károly Sós . Under his direction, the GDR national team completed 15 international matches, of which they won five and drew five times. After the GDR missed qualifying for the 1970 World Cup on November 22, 1969 with the 3-0 defeat against Italy , Seeger was replaced by Georg Buschner on January 1, 1970 .

At the end of his career, Seeger was coach of the first division club 1. FC Union Berlin at the beginning of the 1970/71 football season . With the fifth place in the table at the end of the season he reached the best result of the club in the GDR league. In 1972 Seeger finally ended his coaching career.
