Erwin Stresemann was the son of the pharmacist Richard Stresemann and his wife Marie, née Dunkelbeck. From 1908 he studied natural sciences (especially zoology) at the universities of Jena, Freiburg and Munich and from 1910 to 1912 he participated in the 2nd Freiburg Moluccas expedition, which took place under the direction of Karl Deninger . From 1914 to 1918 he did military service and from 1918 worked in the scientific auxiliary department at the Zoological State Collection in Munich . In 1930 he was appointed adjunct professor in Berlin, and in 1946 professor with teaching assignment for zoology. From 1946 to 1959 he was acting director at the Zoological Museum of the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Stresemann was Secretary General, President (from 1949) and Honorary President of the German Ornithological Society and one of the most important ornithologists of the 20th century. From 1922 to 1961 (from 1956 together with Günther Niethammer , a student of Stresemann) he was editor of the journal for ornithology . The Ornithological monthly reports gave Stresemann from 1922 (acquired by Anton Reichenow ) to setting out in 1944. In the 20s and 30s he gave the impetus for a transformation of the older, predominantly faunistic- systematic ornithology into a branch of modern biology and founded a "New Biological Ornithology" through connections with genetics , functional anatomy , physiology and ethology of birds. Konrad Lorenz paid tribute to him on the occasion of his 70th birthday with the words: “All your students have inherited from you the spark of holy enthusiasm for the doctrine of descent, for the greatness of the idea of descent, and that is truly the best gift that a teacher gives his student can give on the way. "

He was a full member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin since 1955 and of the Leopoldina since 1954 .

One of his most famous students was Ernst Mayr . Stresemann was the founder and publisher of the "Excursion Fauna of Germany", a popular identification book for the local animal world, which is still published today and is simply referred to as "The Stresemann" by zoology students .

In 1960 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver in the GDR .

Erwin Stresemann was married from 1916 to 1939 to Elisabeth Deninger, sister of Karl Deninger (see above) and daughter of the Mainz chemist Albert Deninger , who was co-owner of the Mainz leather factory Mayer-Michel-Deninger , but around 1900 more because of his calcium fluoride tests for caries prophylaxis got known. The marriage ended in divorce in 1939 and Stresemann married Vesta Grote in 1941.
