Dahlem forest cemetery

The Dahlem forest cemetery in Berlin's Steglitz-Zehlendorf district is located on the edge of the Grunewald forest at Hüttenweg 47. Established between 1931 and 1933 according to plans by Albert Brodersen , it is one of Berlin's younger cemeteries . With the graves of writers such as Gottfried Benn , composers such as Wolfgang Werner Eisbrenner , the painter Karl Schmidt-Rottluff , the actor O. E. Hasse , Hans Epskamp or the actor and entertainer Harald Juhnke , the park cemetery is one of the so-called “celebrity cemeteries ”. Due to its dense population of conifers, it is also one of the most scenic cemeteries in the German capital.

Design as a simple park cemetery

When designing the 75,407 m² state-owned cemetery, the focus was on integration into the urban forest area in the form of a park cemetery. Two generous central pine avenues intersect and divide the area into four main fields. The graves are geometrically arranged in long rows of hedges and are mostly separated from each other by hedges, so that they get lost in the green on the tree-lined terrain. The restrained appearance of the tombs is also due to the conception, which, with its priority of horticultural design, does not allow for elaborate tombs . Monumental buildings and larger artistic sculptures as in many historical Berlin cemeteries are not found here.

Another reason for the astonishingly ostentatious and, apart from individual ornaments , also largely adornment-free tomb design in a "celebrity cemetery" was the goal of the tomb reform movement, which countered the bourgeois need for representation by dealing with death more objectively and aimed at a uniform tomb design. This conception also corresponded to the line of the National Socialists , who consistently rejected applications for the erection of grave figures.

The "Royal Horticultural Director" Albert Brodersen created the design for the complex in 1929, who was already involved in works such as the former Botanical Garden on Potsdamer Strasse (today's Heinrich-von-Kleist-Park ), the expansion of Viktoriapark on Kreuzberg or had emphasized the scenic beauty of the city by emphasizing its many greenery in designs for the Rehberge park . Since Brodersen died in 1930, he did not experience the work on the forest cemetery or its opening in 1933.

Chapel and outbuildings

chapel

In the rear part of the cemetery, behind a long oval forecourt, lies the cemetery chapel, which was built by Heinrich Schweitzer in 1931/1932 . It is a masonry building in the style of expressive realism , the facades of which are plastered yellow and the corners are clad with plastering stones. The building has a T-shaped floor plan with a small open vestibule that is covered by a pent roof. The actual chapel roof is a gable roof that rests on a wooden support structure and extends over the lower extensions at the rear. The side facades are interrupted by tall rectangular windows made of cathedral glass with lead frames . There is also a bell carrier in the roof gable . The interior of the chapel has a double-broken wooden ceiling and an altar niche with a high pointed arch .

The two low gate structures and a few other ancillary structures were also built by Schweitzer in 1932. The gate structures each contain a round arch arcade , and a flower shop is also integrated in the northern building. The southern gate is followed by an open hall and the cemetery keeper's house, which contains the administration and living rooms.
