Werner Janensch at the Tendaguru

Werner Ernst Martin Janensch (born November 10, 1878 in Herzberg (Elster) , † October 20, 1969 in Berlin ) was a German paleontologist , geologist and explorer .

Werner Janensch was one of the outstanding German vertebrate paleontologists of the first half of the 20th century and, along with Friedrich von Huene , probably the most important German dinosaur specialist . He is particularly known for his leadership of the German Tendaguru expeditions, which he undertook as curator of the Berlin Zoological Museum from 1909 and the results of which he published in numerous monographs and shorter papers during his long research career between 1914 and 1961. Janensch named among other things the dinosaur species Brachiosaurus brancai , Dicraeosaurus hermanni , Dicraeosaurus sattleri and Elaphrosaurus bambergi .

The Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences honored him in 1911 with the silver Leibniz Medal . In 1912 he was appointed professor at the Geological-Paleontological Institute of the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin. In 1913 he became a member and in 1958 an honorary member of the Paleontological Society .
