William Benecke (* October 17 . Jul / 29. October  1883 greg. In Zawiercie , Russia ; † 4. September 1962 in West Berlin ) was a German politician (DVP; FDP / LDP).

Life

Wilhelm Benecke came from a long-established Berlin family. He attended high school in his hometown. After graduating from high school, he completed a traineeship at AEG in order to then study mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, and later mathematics , physics and chemistry . In 1908 he passed the state examination for higher education. From 1910 to January 1, 1934, Benecke worked as a senior teacher in Berlin.

As a friend of Gustav Stresemann , Benecke participated in the founding of the German People's Party (DVP) at the end of 1918 . From 1919 to 1934 he was an unpaid city ​​councilor in Berlin. On May 29, 1923 Benecke moved after replacement for Wilhelm Kahl , who had resigned from his position on May 25, in the June 1920 selected first Reichstag of the Weimar Republic one in which he until the Reichstag elections of May 1924 the constituency 2 (Berlin ) represented.

In 1928, Benecke was elected deputy mayor of the Zehlendorf district. He finally did not take up his post due to his involvement in the Sklarek scandal : he was accused of having countersigned the contract extension for Gabels in favor of the Sklareks, thus leaving them with their monopoly. In 1929 Benecke was suspended from duty. In the same year he went on a long trip to the United States with his friend Gustav Boess .

On January 1, 1934, Benecke was retired due to the law to restore the civil service . From 1933 to 1945 he held positions in industry.

After the Second World War , Benecke participated in the founding of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) in Berlin and the Liberal Democratic Party of Germany (LDP) in the summer of 1945 . In 1946 he was elected to the District Assembly (BVV) Zehlendorf, which in turn elected him District Mayor in 1950 . For the FDP / LDP he was a member of the city council of Berlin-Niederschönhausen . He also sat in the Berlin House of Representatives from 1950 to 1958 .

Wilhelm Benecke died in Berlin in 1962 at the age of 78. His grave is in the Dahlem forest cemetery .
