Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen (born February 9, 1934 in Berlin ; † May 1, 2014 there ) was a German athlete , entrepreneur , sports official .

Career

Richthofen was the eldest son of the merchant Bolko Freiherr von Richthofen (1903–1971) and Viktoria Praetorius Freiin von Richthofen (1914–2002). The parents' marriage ended in divorce. One uncle was the fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen (1892–1918) of the same name, also known as the “Red Baron” .

He attended the boarding school in Salem Castle and the St. Goarshausen grammar school. After graduating from high school, he studied sport and social education and was an active player in the top hockey league between 1951 and 1961. From 1960 to 1969 he was a sports teacher and teacher for political world studies at the Canisius College in Berlin and held various coaching functions at the Berlin Hockey Association.

In 1969, Richthofen became a full-time sports official and director of the Berlin State Sports Association . He gave up this position in 1985 and worked from then on as an entrepreneur. In the same year he took over the presidency of the State Sports Association of Berlin. Since 1983 he has been a member of the German National Olympic Committee (NOK).

In December 1994 he was elected to succeed Hans Hansen as President of the German Sports Confederation (DSB). His term of office ended with the establishment of the German Olympic Sports Confederation as a merger of DSB and NOK in May 2006.

He died on May 1, 2014 at the age of 80 in Berlin. Richthofen found his final resting place in the Berlin forest cemetery in Dahlem (field 011-219).
